How do you get the matte behind a person?

I'm trying to do one of those titles you see done in documentaries where the lower thirds matte appears behind the person. Unfortunately I can only get it to be in front!

How would I go about doing this? I know masking would be one way, but there's got to be a better way than going frame by frame cutting them out (or is there.....)

I tried transfer modes and such but I'm not too great with those maybe my layers are wrong.

Thanks!

Try to pull a luma key on your white background. Then composite your subject over the lower third on a white layer.

But would that not also show through the white portions of his shirt?

I would recommend using a garbage matte, which will need to be adjusted frame-by-frame, to cut out the lower third bar around the subject.

I pulled a quick key off the sample image to make sure I wasn't giving bad info. It worked fine.

Of course, my advice could be bogus. Wouldn't be the first time.

You could always be safe and use C2V's method. Happy keyframing...

Ok this actually worked. Great advice from the film I voted #1 for Twilightfest! I appreciate the effort you went through to give an accurate response.

So if it wasn't a white background - such as if this was shot outside the only way would be to mask him out?

Mask him and if he doesn't move his arms too drastically, you could always motion keyframe him in Motion.

But then again, it all depends on how familiar you are with -that- program.
