How do YOU export P2 from Avid?

Hello -

Extensive googling has turned up no best case way to export P2 (720/24pn) sequence to master quality file.

I've found a lot of theorizing about what SHOULD work, but would love to hear from anyone who actually does this. For example, Animation & DNXHD results in huge gamma shifts, plus there are seemingly infinite variations on these two flavors and no one seems to post what their final solution is, only their difficulties.

Thanks in advance for sharing your real-world case studies.

I am suprised by lack of response to this thread.

People are obviously getting P2 into Avid, how the heck are they getting it out?

Anyone? Bueller? Bueller??

Well, there is no export P2. P2 is not a codec. So you're either talking about exporting DVCProHD or you're exporting AVC-Intra. DVC-ProHD is a tape/card format so to lay off to it, you need a deck. AVC-Intra is a card based codec and also uses a deck. Here is an example:

http://www.panasonic-broadcast.com/en/products/p2-series/p2-deck/AJ-HPD2500.php

Mainconcept offer an AVC-I codec for decode/encode for $1550.

The DVCProHD one is $770.

These prices do not include the cost of the base codec package which is required.

So if you want to export tapeless into these two formats, you're looking at about a $2.5k-$3k investment, or if you want to lay off to card/tape, you need to purchase a deck which will be quite a bit more expensive.

Getting it out to WHAT? DVD? Web? You say "Mastering file," but don't indicate mastering to WHAT? I typically output to tape, so I output via the Avid DX hardware. Or, if I go to DVD, I export a QT Reference, and take that into my DVD Authoring software.

We can't answer the question unless you tell us how you want to master..to what end?
