How do you connect R44 to MixPre?

To feed the MixPre into the R44, you'll need two XLR-F>1/4" TRS cables. Connect each XLR out of the MixPre to one of the inputs on the R44. Be sure to set your MixPre outputs to LINE, and to reduce the input sensitivity on the R44 to accept line-level in. Also, trun off the phantom power for the inputs on the R44 that are receiving the MixPre.

Thanks Alex, you are the man!!!! Just curious, why do I need two cables?

Just a clearing up question, why XLR-F>1/4" TRS ? would an XLR>XLR do the job, i have the same setup and whenever i add the Mixpre, i see no advantage gain, is it my connection with the XLR>XLR which is wrong?

I find that nothing lower cost beats the audio quality of the Sound Devices preamps, so adding a MixPre to the mix produces a nicer sound. ( not a huge difference, but noticeable when you do A/B comparisons )

Regular MixPre or newer digital model MixPre-D? If I recall, the R44 has a digital In. Not sure if the two are compatible digitally, but if they are, AES / digital would be the cleanest.

I love how you completely ignored qap's question lol. Will a regular ol' XLR-F>XLR-M cable get the job done?

I don't have a R44, but would assume either/or would work. XLR> XLR OR an XLR> 1/4" TRS.
Unless I missed something, the manual seems to indicate there's no specific mic/line switch and the preamp gain setting ( outer ring Input level knob [SENS] ) goes from mic to line, -56 to +4dB. (I find this kind of odd but I guess that's the way it is, no way to bypass the preamp, I would have expected different on the device in that price range)

Manual, Pg.30 "These knobs adjust the input level from each Combo input jack 1–4 (p. 30).
You can adjust sensitivity to 11 levels: +4, -2, -8, -14, -20, -26, -32,-38, -44, -50, and -56 dBu. You can also set
the level from negative infinity to +8 dB, with the central position at 0 dB

It should, according to the manual diagram the R44's TRS and XLR inputs appear to be in parallel with each other. Be sure to set the R44 input sensitivity to +4dBu since that's the output level of the MixPre.

He stated that he saw no advantage to feeding the MixPre output to the R-44, to which I replied that I definitely find an audible improvement by using MixPre preamps before any other low cost recording gear. I have access to an R-44 recorder and I own a MixPre-D so I will definitely investigate this further, especially using the digital output from the MixPre-D into the R-44.

As for 1/4 inch TRS vs XLR, I am pretty sure it makes no difference with the R-44 recorder. ( R-44 inputs are rated from +4 dB to -56 dB )
