I heard this is harder to do than 24pA... but how do you do this? And how hard of a quality loss will the footage suffer due to the 3:2 pulldown of 24P normal. Where in Avid can I capture in 29.97fps and then remove pulldown afterwards and turn to 24fps?

Is softwares such as DV film magic or Cinema Tools any advantage to removing pulldown? Or does Avid do this for free?

Thanks,

JM

You can capture NORMAL 23.976 over firewire just with 24pA. Set the cadence to NORMAL 2:3:2:3 in the Film/24p settings and you are all set.

Although you are doing a decompress/recompress of the sources, you will not see ay diference. Most of the time there is a decompress/recompress anyway everytime you render an effect, etc.

Thanks for the reply!

Just want to confirm though, will the 24P Normal footage be captured first at 29.97fps before it applies the pulldown? Just wanting to confirm because Noah told me to always capture the footage on 29.97fps before you apply pulldown.

Thanks!

Also, I was doing some research, and it seems removing pulldown for footage shot on 24P Normal mode is different than removing pulldown with 24P Advanced. For example, final cut pro users would use "Cinema tools" and then they have to go frame by frame until it shows interlacing..then go like two frames back and that would be the "A" frame... it appears you have to tell it which is the A frame so it will do the pulldown correctly. How do you do this with Avid?

Thanks,

JM

just use 24pa and remove pulldown in Avid

it takes the split frame out and wallah
progresssive footage

You don't have to worry about what they do in FCP/Cinema Tools. It's a totally different animal.

Don't capture as 29.97; do as Michael says.

For clarification, pulldown is "applied" in camera when the 24p footage is recorded in a 29.97 stream. What Avid will do is REMOVE the pulldown and give you the original 24p frames back.

But it's easier to remove 24pA pulldown, so if you're going to edit in 24p, shoot 24pA, always.

So do I just create a new 23.97fps timeline, go to capture, choose my deck, check that the cadence is set to normal 2:3:2:3 and then just capture footage? It will capture it correctly?

And why is it easier to remove 24pA pulldown? I now know that 24pA is the best way to go to edit 23.97 timeline, but if I shot on regular 24p mode isn't it just a matter of making sure that the setting and cadence is set for "normal" and Avid removes the pulldown automatically?

Also, I just want someone to confirm that it's Ok to capture straight into a 23.97 timeline because I watched Noah's DVD and the whole "always, always, capture in 29.97 first" kinda rubbed onto me, but I guess that was just for FCP...? but then his explanation made sense, that if you capture at 23.97 first, the NLE will just be removing pulldown at random points and it can have negative consequences, whereas if you capture at 29.97fps then you retain the pulldown flags or whatever and then pulldown can be removed accurately. But Avid doesn't have to worry about this? Someone can confirm?

Thanks

avid does have to worry about this. i've captured regular 24p footage as a 23.97 timeline before, and at first i didn't have a problem until i saw my out put, you'll get frame jitters and slight image tears. 24p regular, capture at 29.97 always, everybody is right, those 24 frames are in there the NLE will take care of it. if it looks pretty and it works, don't try to over think it.

That may have been because of how you exported. If you weren't seeing the problem on the timeline, then the footage was fine.

24pA is easier because all that needs to be done is to blend each field pair into a frame and then drop every fifth frame. With 2:3 pulldown, the third 24p frame has be unstitched and reconstructed.

Avid and FCP do things differently. What he says does not apply to Avid.
