How do u properly capture & apply pulldown on DVX footage *normal* 24p mode? Please.

Please, anyone can give their input on this?

I watched Noah's DVD, and he explains how regular 24p footage (not 24p advanced) does not have the the pulldown "flags" inserted, so that's why you have to show where the first frame is for the editor (in the DVD's example it was Final Cut Pro)... or else the end result would be hit & miss and might not turn out right.

And also on that DVD he stresses that one must always capture on 29.97fps before removing pulldown because the DVX shoots at NTSC which is 29.97, so to preserve the full pull-down info you need to capture footage first at 29.97 and then apply pulldown. If you skip that step and capture footage straight at 23.97fps then the editor just does a "random" pulldown which is not good.

Are these problems only something FCP users have to be concerned with?

And just to be sure, can someone list the steps to properly capture and apply pulldown to footage shot on DVX100 at 24p normal mode (*not* 24p advanced)?

Thanks,

JM

I've never watched Noah's DVD, but I know that capturing in 24p and "removing" pulldown off of material on a 29.97 tape is way easier and faster on the Avid than on that other, lesser editing system. The key thing is you need a controllable deck. You cannot digitize on the fly, because then you have a 5 in 1 chance of messing up the cadence of the progressive frames.

What you need to do is create a 23.97 project and then log your tape before capturing. When logging, make sure that the first frame is the A-frame. The A-frame is the one frame where both the interlaced video and the progressive source line up perfectly to make a complete frame. If your first frame of your clip starts on the B, C, or D frame, then you will get a bad stuttering effect.

I find that more often than not, the A frame starts at :00 and :05, but you need to be able to scroll field by field on your tape to truly be sure.

Just go to the Film/24p settings and set cadence to NORMAL, set 00:00:00:00 to "A and you can capture on the fly over FireWire to native 23.976p. Same as with ADVANCED pulldown.
