How do I use Beachtek DXA-4P for two audio tracks in post?

Hi,

I use a Canon GL2 with a Beachtek DXA-4P audio adapter, and I use two RODE NTG2 mics through that.

My question is, when I record the sound, and then I capture the footage onto Premiere Pro, how can I arrange it so that it loads two audio tracks? In the past I've just uploaded one, but I know you can have two since there are two mics recording on two channels. Can anyone help?

Thanks

Wait... are you trying to figure out how to split the mics to record to separate channels, or are you trying to figure out how to capture both channels in Premiere?

Both. While filming there are two channels that I can control via the knobs. But yeah I'd like to know how to split the mics to separate channels.

And then how I capture both channels on Premiere.

There are three switches on the DXA-4P... the two outer switches select mic-level or line-level input for each XLR connection. The one in the middle can be set to "M" (mono) or "S" (stereo). Setting to "S" assigns each input to its own record channel.

And then how I capture both channels on Premiere.

Well, assuming that you are set up to capture "stereo" audio, it should bring in both channels. I'm not a Premiere Pro user, so I can't tell you the exact settings, but there might also be a way to capture the audio for what it actually is: dual mono. If you find such a setting, it's better that way as the audio comes in as two independent tracks, rather than a linked stereo pair. But if you have to bring it in as a linked stereo pair, they can be split apart during the edit.

Ken,

If I understand correctly you want two separate tracks, one for each mic. Copy the audio track and use the "Fill Left" and "Fill Right" options in the audio effects. As C2V pointed out, make sure had the switch set to "Stereo" or you will just have been recording 1 mic (left input I think) onto both tracks.

In case you don't know how.
In Premiere you place the clip in your timeline and then right click on it which brings up some options. Select "Unlink Audio and Video". Next, since both the audio and video are still selected click on a separate clip or empty track which will un-select the current clip (now in 2 pieces, audio and video). Now, right click and copy the audio clip and paste it on its own track (make sure it is lined up with the original). Go into the Audio Effects tab in the project window and drag "Fill Left" into the original audio track, and drag "Fill Right" into the copied track. You now have a dedicated track for each mic.

I hope this helps.

Just to clarify,

Hi,

In the past I've just uploaded one, but I know you can have two since there are two mics recording on two channels.

In the past you have uploaded two channels. Two mics in stereo (L/R) on the same track. If you were only using one mic you still had a left and right side to the track, one was just empty. What I described splits that stereo track into 2 independent mono tracks. I guess really it is still two stereo tracks but each track is just replicating the single microphone to the other side (Track 1= L/L Track 2= R/R). If you ever use just one mic you can save some time and flip the switch to mono on the beachtek, this will do the same thing as the fill effect.
