Hey folks - I did some digging on this forum (and the internet) but couldn't come up with a solid answer, so here I am...

I have some old VHS tapes I need to digitize (for DVD, QT, etc.). I have at my disposal a TV and VRC (w/RCA) setup, my HPX-170, and my old DVX-100A. I couldn't figure out how to make this work with my HPX, but am not convinced it can't be done. I'd love to avoid using my DVX and have to deal with recording to and capturing tape, but am willing to if it can't be done with the HPX/P2.

Any guidance on this would be greatly appreciated.

HPX170 can't do it, but the DVX100 can. You can pipe it into the DVX and have it live transcode to the firewire output, so you could capture the footage directly to computer and avoid the hassle of tape.

Still haven't quite figured this out, and wondering if someone can help with the method Barry described above.

Here's how I've got it set up:

- RCA out from VCR into DVX-100A RCA
- DV out from DVX100A into LaCie External hard drive via Firewire400
- Firewire 800 out from Lacie drive into Macbook Pro via FW800
- I've set DV Out as "on" in my DVX settings
- Using FCP v. 7.0.3

I'm getting playback on the DVX and in FCP's Log and Capture, but when I click "capture now", I get a black window and the note: "waiting for timecode. Device must be in VTR mode when device control is enabled."

Is there another setting in FCP or on the DVX I need to change for FCP to recognize timecode, or bypass this step altogether and allow capturing to proceed? Something I'm not taking into account?

Any thoughts on where to go from here would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks Steve. I got a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter so I can go straight from my DVX into my Macbook Pro. And I selected "Non-Controllable Device" in the capture settings, and it works!

Really appreciate the assistance.
