How do I raise a DSLR off tripod platform when using a too-large lens?

Say you have a fluid head with a long base -- i.e. a Sachtler FSB8. That particular head has a sliding plate.

With a DSLR and a large diameter lens, it's impossible to mount the camera directly onto the Sacthler's plate. The lens is just too big. The solution is to raise the camera off the plate about a 1/2" but I can't find the part that will enable me to do this. Any ideas or advice?

Sounds like you're not using rails, so how about a quick release plate? A Manfrotto 577 will raise your camera by about that much.
