How do I make those noises?

I recently watched this video: http://www.vimeo.com/14839484

How are those sounds being generated? Synthesizer? Cinema sound effects from a CD collection? I'd love to use something similar but don't know where to begin.

If it is a synth, does anyone have a recommendation?

Likely everything you mentioned.

For synth cinema work, I use a midi controller and use Spectrasonics Omnisphere and and IKs Miroslav Philharmonik. If I can do it with these, I'll go out and grab some industrial sounds, bring them back and load them into sample tank.

You can use everything from stock FX from a CD library to record-your-own Foley to synth sounds. But it doesn't stop at just the sounds themselves. Using a capable DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), those sounds are often layered, and are also put through lots of processing from flangers to pitch-shifters to delays and time compression/expansion. More often than not, any one "sound" that you hear is actually a composite of several sounds that have each been transformed from the original.

LOL five stars

OP. That is probably all FX and editing (except for the music). Some of the sounds were probably synth originally, but it's the editing that your talking about. So read the post sound sticky since it has a lot of what your looking for in it. The short version is that it was well cut and layered up. It's not about picking "the right sound" it's about picking the right bunch of sounds and editing them together (layering them) and probably altering some of them. The first step is to break down the sound bits you need and then finding things that serve those functions and then cutting them together so the mix gets you what you want. Good sounds are important but experience and really thinking about what you want and how to build it are the biggies.
