How do I install a filter?

I just got my first filter, 72mm Hoya UV filter, and I need help to break my cherry.  There are no installation instructions in the filter packaging or the stock manual.

My best guess would be to remove the lens hood and carefully screw the filter in???  I'd prefer not to learn any lessons the hard way  ;)  

I searched for this topic on the forum in vain -- I'm sure it's been addressed and I appreciate any help or links.

That's how you do it. Be careful not to let anything in when you're putting it on (dust, fuzz, lint) and be mindful of how easy it is to smudge the UV without realizing it.

Thanks. I think I've got it. My lens cover doesn't fit anymore. What's the protocol?

No lens cap.  :-/

I just keep my Mattebox on 24/7 and close the doors. Whuch means if you dont have this then you gotta be REALLY CAREFUL. Even so, if you scratch the UV its basially protecting the STOCK lens.
