How do I get this effect .. BMW films titles ?

Hello,

I want to create a similar titile seq to the one on those bmw films :
http://intl.bmwfilms.com/clap.asp?t...tthedevil&player=qt&speed=300K&commentary=off

Its like lots of tiny screens with different images - the only way I know of doing something similar with fcp is - by layrering tracks & changing the scale for each track but - this would take forever to create a similar effect to the one on the bmw film title seq's.
Is there some sort of plugin that can emulate the small screens effect or even possible split into lots of squares or diff shapes ?

Any ideas would be much appreciated

Hey great question. I have no clue but am interested in finding out how! Now the BMW film looked like it was all one screen just seperated into different sections. Are you wanting different shots in each partition, or are you wanting it like BMW where it has one shot sort of seperated out?

Hi,

I guess I want one shot all seperated out like a grid but - now you mention it , that would be cool to have a few different shots in the squares - but where & how ??

my brain can only think of layering a whole bunch of tracks on top of each other then changing scale & position but - this would be impossible! even for my g5 ie: say I want 20 squares - I would have to layer 20 tracks !! which is absurd - surely!
Surely there is a plugin that creates sepration like on those 60's 70's tv cop shows etc

Not absurd... that's what you'd have to do. After Effects handles this much better than FCP, but it can still be done there. Go to www.creativecow.net and check out their tutorials for video walls.

Good luck,

seriously .. 20 tracks ?! my g5 starts spinning the rainbow wheel after about 5 !

20 .. really ?

Prepare yourself for long renders. You won't be able to do that many tracks in RT.

What if you did one column of tracks (like from 4 on top of each other on the screen from the top left to the bottom left) then nested those. Then you went on to the second column of for, then nested again and so on. I am just guessing here, but wouldn't save you some rendering time?

In the long run, rendering would probably end up being the same as you would have to render every sequence for it to play smoothly when you nested it.

AFAIK, there's no plugin for this sort of thing. You just gotta animate each layer as you want it. It's just the way it's done.

Sorry Carrington,

This is why films spend so much of their budget on special effects. Stuff like this take a lot of hours to complete. But be happy having a G5. I do a lot of layering and motion in FCP. I got the Dual 2Ghz G5 right when it came out. I rerendered one of my past projects. It was a 30 second spot with some (not a lot of rendering) and it took 45 minutes to render on my G4 400Mhz. Then I jumped to my Dual G5 which took care of it in 6 minutes. I almost started crying I was so happy.

As far as getting as much done realtime as possible. Set your realtime settings to Low quality for setting up the majority of your video. Then go back and set it at full quality to start making small adjustments. You will probably have to render after every adjustment.
One other thing to try would be to possibly use a matte of those "windows" that you create in Photoshop and use it as an alpha matte.

Good luck. Once you get it all done, then you could export a XML file and let us use it to pick up all of the motion and overlay settings! Ha.
