How do I get it into my PC?

In the manual I read that you should use the supplied software to move footate from the camera into a computer, but is that necessary?

I'm planning on getting FCP but for now I just bought Pinnacle to do some test editing, as it can edit AVCHD.

Does anyone know the sequence for getting it into the computer and editing it in this software?

Just drag and drop, or copy and paste, from the card to the place of your choice on your PC. I make dated folders (named yy-mm-dd) and drag the entire contents of the card into the folder, then format the card and start again. It's just normal operating system files and folders, nothing special.
 
Do I transfer the files by connecting the Camera to the Computer or just plug the card into my computer?
 
I've read in some photo forums that it's more secure (and possibly faster) to use a card reader (though it has to be capable of reading an SDHC card as well as an SD card). I'm not so sure, as a card might possibly be fried by taking it out of the camera and inserting it in the reader (though really that shouldn't actually happen).

Having done the transfer, make a backup to a separate device (another drive, or a DVD) before wiping the card, so you've always got two copies.
