How do I convert 24P?

Okay, so I've got the camera, it looks great and no problems. I'm with a crew out doing a skateboard shoot for a music video with the Sony F900 when the director calls a wrap. I'm thinking what a great time to test the 24P on my camera so I'm standing there doc shooting when the DP comes up and asks to borrow my camera. He's worried he needs to "save the shoot". He's not feeling like he's got radical enough stuff so he freeforms with my new HD100 with the boarders and then comes and asks if I can get this footage in a form he can use.

I captured on DV Rack and took them to my Final Cut system which doesn't even seem to recognize the files. Anyone done any converting of 24P either up or down on a Mac? Ideally, I want to go to 1080i.

Thanks,

Warren

Download MPEG Streamclip and convert the .ts or.m2t files to the codec of your choice.

Ideally that would be Uncompressed 1080p, but you probably won't have enough disk space and even if you did, it'd be difficult to move the uncompressed files to the rig their editing the spot on.

Maybe converting to something like DVCPRO HD 1080 would be the best bet. It's hard to say, not knowing what they're editing on.

I'm trying the streamclip but apparently it thinks I don't have the mpeg component I need. I'm using Final Cut Studio so I should have everything necessary for Streamclip to work. Any suggestions?

It would be great to have the little HD100 come to the rescue.

I was actually in the Apple store in South Coast Plaza tonight and i was checking out FCP 5 and there is an option for 720p24p. One of the gentleman working there said that it was just updated within the last few days. So there is that option now.

Unfortunately when I returned to ask a more knowledgable person about when the release date for the update would be they all had no clue what I was talking about. I even checked again to make sure I saw the update correctly and it was there plain and simple, 720p24p.

Was it DVCPROHD 720p24 or did it say HDV 720p24 ? 5.0.2 already supports DVCPROHD 720p24. The best thing to do if you are in the store again is just check the "about Final Cut Pro" and see if it is v5.0.2 or something newer.

At least I got Streamclip to work by redownloading the mpeg component from Apple. That gets me the files. I just need to decide the best conversion.

Try the DVCPROHD codec for space efficiency, or use Apple's Intermediate Codec for lossless quality (big file sizes.)

MPEG Streamclip works well at upscaling to 1920x1080, but I would stay unscaled 1280x720 and just scale up your final edit.
FCP5.0.2 will understand a 60P (59.94) file (which is what the m2t will be) but will automatically remove the pulldown when the clip is inserted into a 23.98 sequence.
Rendering will most likely be required though.

Thanks Tim. I tried the Apple Intermediate and upscaled in the timeline. It looks pretty darn good. BTW, I tried your suggested manual knee settings and I was impressed at how well everything held up in natural harsh sunlight.
