I have shot a lot of footage with the GH1 and have backed everything up on an external hard drive. But I would like to know if there's a safer way to store the footage. i.e. can I burn the files as a data disk on a dvd?
Get an removable hard drive dock, make sure that your disk controller is set to AHCI mode, and then get a large cheap hard drive. Archive your files regularly to the removable drive. When full, store it in a plastic case and set on your shelf. Think of it as a large floppy disk.
p.s., I use this method for archiving off older projects. My current backup strategy is to use a Raid 0 array for normal workload. This is backed up the a backup drive every 2 hours - a 2Tb WD caviar green. Every day, the files are copied from my backup drive to another 2Tb WD caviar green on my file server. I'm comfortable that I no longer need the project files, I copy them to my removable archive drive. When that is full, I remove and replace the archive drive and then delete the project files from the backup drive and file server. It's a hassle, but it gives me decent performance (raid 0) and relative safety.
