How do I achieve this effect

Are these effects achievable in Vegas? ( The morphing and layering 1:34 - 1:36, 2:19-2:25, 2:39-2:42, 3:45-3:50)or just aftereffects? How about in FCP? I really like the clip with the fast moving clouds in the background (7:20-7:25)and the rider in the foreground. thanks, mark.

Some of it you could do in Vegas; most of it, you could not. You'd need After Effects, a number of plug-ins, and some special photography with the end effect in mind.

Wow thats one hell of a clip!!Iv seen a couple of things that could be achieved on vegas...but most of the things there are just wow...

I have after effects, but have limited experience with it. Are there any tutorials online for these type of effects? What type of plug ins would I need?

One advantage for shooting a piece like this is that they were able to shoot from shore for much of it and were able to take advantage of a locked down camera to capture footage.

The effect at 3:45 with the fast moving clouds looks like a time lapse or speeded up footage of the clouds in a layer that is masked by the mountains and water. The part with him just looked like a matter of cutting and repeating clips of the motion or still that you want layed out in different layers and then having it all collapse together at the end of the clip. The constantly moving water would be done the same as the clouds, just layered on top of the original clip of the water, city, and mountains. I would also think that all of this was probably shot at 60 fps for better post manipulation.

I use Boris Red 4.2 and would think you could achieve most of those effects in Boris or AE. The exception would be he hologram at 3:18 and that could be done in most any 3d program and then camera tracking data could be obtained from Syntheyes to motion track it to the live clip. Instead of using a fixed camera for that shot which would have been far easier to layer the 3d image on, they used a handheld shot to help "sell" the effect. Very nicely done. I use Maya for such stuff and know from experience it takes a lot of work to create something as simple as that.

Really nice vid man, it really raises the bar for special FX/editing on action sports I'd say. As far as the camera-thru-window type effect (same basic idea behind going through the peep hole as well, although a bit 3d and some more AE involved), there's a tutorial on videocopilot.net for the window effect though, you could take that and taper it to your needs, but the guy editing this video definitely has some serious skills.

Wohh...dude...that is some seriously awesome skill on the surfer, the camera guys, and the guy sitting for hours and hours in front of that computer editing the piece. The only skill that is lacking is the acting.

beat me to it. though, i like the cheesiness...gives much humor compared to those intense action clips. plus, they were probably drunk. and did anyone notice how much the quality dropped in the static areas of those hi-effect clips...in my opinion, it devalues the effect. the multiplied effect where the surfer turns to smoke synced with the drums of the Tool song was bada$$.
