Sunrise and Sunset on one day could be different from Sunrise and Sunset on another day. It would also be different from one location to another (e.g. Canada vs Texas or Norway vs Spain, Japan vs New Zealand etc). With this in mind is would be crazy to offer settings that would work 'as-is'. Perhaps you can try several settings one day then go back the next and film according to your findings?

You need to do a test shoot with the camera angle and location. What do you want to expose for?

It is a little tricky since while the sun is bright fading to dark you will need to open the exposure to capture the 'whole' sunset if you will (and opposite for the sunrise).

Honestly the easy way is to use auto irus... it just gets a little tricky when you have to add or remove a ND filter.

Also Zebras will help you not over expose.

You're just gonna have to go out there and do it, I think. Every sunset is different - if there are overhanging clouds, they'll glow more orange than would just a blue sky.

In my mind, you should go out there well in advance and set up your camera yourself, going through and manipulating all you can to put together an image that meets your specific needs. This is what I do with my DVX...I know its not that HMC, but similar idea I guess.

Stop the lens down as far as you can. Then use the shutter to adjust exposure. Keep any gain off. If you have any grad filters. you can get some nice effects with lighting. It's really just trial and error. play with it till you find something you like.

I did a couple in Barbados a couple months back and I am editing this week so I will look up my notes and tell you what did but they look great. No gain and grad nd ad mentioned above. but will check for you and if you want pm and I will send you some grabs. I can't publicy publish any material until the program is broadcast.

The grad ND is key to getting a better effect. I also advocate for using one along with auto-iris if you want to keep the whole frame properly exposed even when the backlight is extreme.
