How can I tell if footage was shot at 24 or 24Adva

Hi guys!

I have some footage that was partially shot at 24p and the rest at 24pa, however it has already been captured with Final Cut Pro as regular DV NTSC footage. I want to edit the footage in a 24p timeline, is there anyway to tell if it was shot at 24p or 24pa (in order to determine the appropriate pulldown removal method)?

There are no logs, and don't know at what point exactly was the camera switched to 24pa. There's even a chance that this went on and off, so I've got about 600 clips of 24p and 24pa footage that need to be correctly identified.

Thanks!

Well... if you've already captured it as 60i, you could always just put it on a 60i timeline and step through the footage, examining it in blocks of five frames.

24P footage will have three "whole frames" followed by two "split frames".

24PA footage will have four "whole frames" followed by one "split frame".

Thought of that, but considering there are about 800+ clips...too time consuming.

When you playback a tape in the camera, there's info displayed on the LCD about exposure, etc etc. I was hoping there was a way to do this with the captured footage.

I know there's an app for mac out there, that can extract timecode info from the clips...maybe this would help, can't seem to find it tho :(

The frame rate info is stored in the user bits. In the DVX Book I described the bit storage method... if you have a way to extract the user bits you could maybe do it. If not, perhaps you could play the footage back out to the camera, and set UB REGEN to OFF, so the camera would dupe the user bits coming from the clip...

Of course, this presupposes that FCP captures and stores the UB data, and I don't know if it does.

Found the app, it's called CatDV. Still fooling around with it to see if it's any help. Hmm...interesting, let me see if I can find the UB in there.

Thanks!

You can find the frame rate of a clip right in the camera in playback. I believe it has to be in VTR mode and I believe you have to thumb though COUNTER menu (I don't have my camera with me at the moment) But it will tell say on the screen what the frame rate is. So you may have to log the tapes all over again and take note to the timecodes and input the 2 different frame rates correctly. Have you already started editing?

Haven't started to edit yet, however I don't think I'll have enough time to capture all the footage again, and the idea of playing back 20+ hrs of footage through the camera heads does not sound very enticing. I'm fooling around with cinematools and from what I've read in its documentation, I think cinematools can guess whether it's 24p or 24pa.

Should've logged the change in settings by pencil, oh well. Thanks for your help guys :)
