How can I capture from VHS?

I work at this place called cage. We provide equipment support to our school and staff. This guy came to ask us if there is a way to capture directly from VHS? I suggested him to put a VHS into a VCR and connect your VCR to your camera through RCA and connect your Camera to your computer through fire wire. Open up final cut and choose Non controllable device and hit capture and you should be good to go. Does all of this make any sense?

If thats not the right way then is there any other way? Thanks for your inputs in advance people.

That's what I do. Sometimes I have to record to Mini DV first, then capture from that. But it takes longer (Obviously)

That's the way to do it, but as Jim points out, not all cameras can support live transcoding. Most less-expensive units will require you to record to DV first. Some, like the DVX100, can take analog input and immediately spit out firewire output, but many cannot so you'll have to record first, then rewind the tape and capture as a normal DV tape.

Using a camera is the cheapest way. I have an ADS Pyro for monitoring FCP edits on a real TV, so I use that when needed. Works great.
