We have a shoot coming up in January with a very important client.

The footage will be projected in a cinema for a large presentation . If we record pro-res using the sdi out on the camera will we get a good enough result from the AF100? Or Would the internal Codec be up to it ? Would we better off renting a Sony F3 ?

The lighting will very controlled in a studio.

Thank you

Adrian

HD is equal to HD and is the same as HD ...no matter which way you say it.

2k and 3k and 4k have more rez than HD and so will resolve better at larger projection sizes.

The native codec projected digitally is pretty good.

(Everything will depend on the screen, the projector and how well you shoot it and then your expectations)

You should do a test to satisfy your self and your client.

Keep in mind even if you rented a 4K digitial camera... do you have a 4K projector?? Probably not. If you aren't projecting 4K digital or 35mm film, anymore than 1920x1080 HD is wasted resolution even if you had it. Arguments could be made for downrezzing from 4K to HD for a sharper image buutttt... eh. What shooter said.

As far as the internal codec. Yes it holds up pretty good. If you can go SDI out OF COURSE it's going to be better. HD-SDI out to ProRes 422 HQ is 220mbps I believe. The internal codec is around 25mbps or so. Way higher bitrate. And luckily, it's cheap to rent something like that if you want to really make sure your bitrate is high. Will people be able to tell the difference? Maybe, maybe not. Keep in mind Blu-Rays generally have a bitrate in the mid 20mbps as well using mpeg4 as well... so project a blu-ray up and see how it looks (better yet, test footage from AF100 as shooter suggested).

Honestly your biggest loss of quality is probably going to be in the projector itself. Make sure your projector is good!

Also, FWIW, many of the countries best theaters project to massive screens - 70' on some - and they project at 2K and look fantastic. Even theaters that have 4K projectors often don't get taken advantage of as very few films are actually released to theaters with a 4K digital cinema package (DCP), so a lot of these "4K Digital" theaters are still showing 2K movies.

Plenty of light in the studio is good. KEEP THE ISO SUPER LOW. The thing with the big screen is going to be that any grain will get amplified. Lots of light, super low ISO, and you should be in good shape :)

Ive seen stuff shot on an HVX200 projected that looked great - the AF100 is a big leap ahead in terms of performance on sharpness and noise. Shot well it will look good. BUT, Im also a believer in, make it the best you can within the budget youre given. I would rent an F3 if the slog option was within the budget.

Test. Test. Test.

The projector is what you need to know more about. As Shooter said its HD just like F3. I have made presentation videos that played back on DVD's that looked pretty good on high end machines but I went to the venue with disk in hand to check it before the big night.

Thanks Everyone solid advice so far.

One of the main reasons I'm asking is I've seen a few people suggest that the AF101 is 800 lines resolution.

Any thoughts?

Thanks again

From this thread:

For reference, Panasonic’s own HMC151 produces 600 lines resolution with moderate signs of aliasing. Sony’s EX1 produces 800 lines with breakup showing in the 1000 lines area with very little visible aliasing. Sony’s NX5 produces 800 lines with breakup showing in the 1000 lines area with obvious signs of aliasing. Panasonic’s 301 produces 600 lines with breakup showing in the 800 lines area with no visible signs of aliasing. JVC’s 700 produces 600 lines with breakup showing in the 800 lines area with obvious signs of aliasing. Canon’s EOS 5D MK2 DSLR produces a very retarded 600 and 800 line area, with a nightmare of rainbow moiré at 1000 lines with so much aliasing it is difficult to even see that there is a resolution chart there at all; it is hideous. Now for the good bit. Panasonic’s all-new AG-AF101 film-like HD camcorder with it’s 4/3rd MOS sensor produced 800 lines of resolution with a little breakup in the 1000 line area with little signs of aliasing and absolutely zero rainbow moiré

HVX was around 540 lines I believe. So it all depends what you are comparing it to.

The answer is that 800 lines of resolution is enough if the content looks great.

I've watched a lot of wobbly or grainy 35mm film prints that couldn't resolve 800 lines. I know, because I did movie trailer titles that were printed to film... and when I saw them my reaction was "Why the hell did I waste all that time rendering at 2K if it was going to end up that soft?!?"

Of course, on a big stage with a crisp 1080p digital projector, you can see the difference. But lighting, color grading, wardrobe, makeup, smooth camera movements etc matter more.
