how are you going to accesorize your HVX?

Vinten has a local LA shop that we send tripods in for such repairs. Call their NYC number and they will refer you.

Hey!
I am something of a DV newbie. I still shoot mostly film. I own a 100a, though, and like it's look for some uses. As for tripods, I have never been disappointed in my O'Connor, and their service is tops.

My main question regarding the forthcoming HVX is about accessories. I haven't seen anything definitive about which DVX accessories will be fully useable on the new HVX. Obviously, tripods and heads will work. Anybody know anything about how the slightly altered HVX form factor affects:
- Lense attachments: Century products are the standard, but will the wide angles, teles, anamorphics, and focus rings that work on the DVX work on the re-tooled HVX Leica 13x (72mm front?? Barrel dimensions??) or will we need to buy new adaptors or glass?
- Rod adaptors: will current rod sets center properly on the HVX, or will we need a new set?
- Batteries: I have a bunch of the longer life 54's. Will they fit the new HVX? Or will it require bigger/higher amp-hr batts (does it use more juice than the DVX)? What about the Anton Bauer adaptor that runs my DVX all day?

It seems most of these issues are basic form-factor items that have likely been determined by now, but I can't find any clear answers yet. But it's important with all the $$ I have tied up in the extras. I'd like to sell my DVX and move up to the HVX, but which accessories to sell, which to keep, which to plan on replacing?

Anyone?

i believe the HVX lens size is 82mm. but dont quote me. i will assure you it is larger than the DVX

no idea on rods

batteries are supposed to be interchangable for DVX and HVX models.

Does anyone know what that mattebox is that the HVX is wearing in the "free instructional brochure" (also on Panasonic website) that shipped with the DVD from Panasonic?

Screw-in filters, the focus ring, and existingly-mounted lens adapters will not work with the HVX. It's possible that maybe Century could take one of their existing lenses and put on a new mount, but AFAIK that remains to be verified. Basically don't count on any lens accessories working.

Not sure. Probably will work.

Batteries are 100% compatible. It uses the same battery as that which comes with the DVX100B.

holy crap! $4500 heads!!

ok maybe sachtler isn't in my budget (yes i understand that is the high end) but thanks for all this tripod feedback.

perhaps i should restate my question. what kind of tripod/head would you folks suggest that fits these requirements
*$800-1500 - obviously my boss would prefer the cheaper one but i want to build in some wiggle room. but if you have good ideas for the low end of my budget even better since that is more likely what i'll be able to get approval on.

* is somewhat lightweight because i'd like to hike with it and the HVX to take some cool off the path nature shots.i understand i can't get the lightest set of sticks because that will cost more than $2k i'm guessing, but what are the lighter options in my budget range?

* i would imagine that i want 2 stage. if i understand it correctly 2 stage sticks give you more height range and the advantage of being a bit more copact when folded up which comes in handy when hiking with them on your back.

* i don't think i need cinestyle drag options on the head though the most advanced level would be nice. i'm just looking for something that does feel cheap. Barry's recommendation of a bogen 3066 in some other thread keeps coming to mind because he said it would give the camera good stability against slight wind shake and swapping P2 cards without disturbing the camera.

and i know i need to find some good local dealers to just try a bunch of different stick and head combos at. does anyone have recommendations for places in the San Fran/San Jose area? I used to live in LA and know where to go for such service but up here there aren't camera houses every other block. The local camera shop has a decent stick selection but not video heads other than the very basic and cheapest feeling.

thanks for all your input.

I want to throw a ray of light and hope your way about the cost of all this support equipment ,
It is not impossible for you to go on ebay or insync pub site or any other site dealing with old cine equipment and find great deals on.
1) wooden sticks (tripod legs ) sometimes called mitchell sticks 100dollars
2) big Miller or other friction heads sometimes painted green when used by the military
3) a good set of wood spreaders and or a square of shag rug .
With some practice, these big friction heads have so much natural counter balance that you can do a pan or tilt which will look almost as good as a fluid head .
However ,,if you go out to shot and get paid by clients this stuff looks funky and it will not build confidence but with a little bit of practice it will work
Good Luck
Bruce

Most Chrosziel, Petroff and Century matteboxes I have seen in the past always have some measure of adjustability. They can't go from a DVX to an XL2, but they may hopefully adjust to compensate for an HVX.

need sticks - recommend specific models please

now that my HVX is here (w/o cards :( ) and i'm waiting for my boss to approve my Edius Broadcast purchase I still haven't decided what kind of sticks and head to get. luckily i'm going to some Snader sponsored HD camera event in South SF tomorrow and will hopefully get to check some tripod gear out.

i'm looking to stay under $1k for sticks and head with more of a focus on having versatile sticks than a super duper feature filled head. i won't be doing m/any complex camera pans or movements since our HVX is for creating test clips for my companys video engineering development, we dont shoot any features or documentaries, at most i'll get to use it for some corporate video production but again nothing fancy.

i'm also not interested in old or used gear. while i won't be making movies with my camera i do plan on doing a bit of hiking to remote places to get unique content for our trade show demos so i dont want to carry old heavy wooden sticks and heads around. something with mid level spreaders and quick adjustable legs would be nice. i'd rahter not spend 2 minutes loosening and tightening legs.

with that said, any recommendations or specific model numbers i should be looking at?

thanks in advance

just got my tripod in the mail today. http://www.evsonline.com/merchant2/m...ode=503351MVB2 that one. its feels great to me. heavy as hell too... and i don't own a car. i just met with the co-director on my animated film about building accessories for my hvx. he's going to put together a custom matte-box that takes 4x4 and larger on a rail system that is going to be mounted on a two handle tommygun style stabilizer with a rifle butt for support and a bi-pod in front for setting down. i'll definitely post pictures when its done.

yes i'm serious. i'm mostly worried about the cops thinking i'm walking around with some freaky rocket launcher with an lcd based targeting system.

almost made up my mind...

so i got to look at some combos in the bay area last week at the Snader trade show, at Gasser in SF and some other place in Palo Alto. the Snader show had Sachtler & Miller demos but i didn't have my HVX at the time.

i wasn't very fond of the Sachtler DV 4II head having only 1 grade of drag. The DV6 head was nice but that package is a bit out of my budget, although probably worth it.

i liked the Miller Solo DV sticks, in particualr the extreme low and high heights it could be set to as well as retractable spiked feet. i don't remember much about the head since i didn't get to test the HVX on it but don't have any particular gripes about it.

i did get to do extensive testing with the HVX on Bogen gear. i was able to play with a 503 and 519 heads extensively as well as the 755B, 525MVB and the very chic 542ART sticks. i actually preferred the 503 head to the 519 for various small reasons aside from the steep price difference. for one, i liked that i could mount the pan handle on the left side. this is an advantage to me since i'm left handed and find it really comfortable to pan/tilt the camera with my left hand while working zoom and focus with my right.

i've pretty much decided on a bogen 503/351 combo due to price but am still considering the Miller Solo DV10 combo because of that almost extra foot of low/high setup range and retractable spikes. i can think of the low end being particularly useful for low angle shots of my companys vice president in his race car.

anybody have any other words of wisdom or suggestions before i make a decision?

thanks

I personally did not find the DS10 or DS20 miller tripods very appealling. They are nowhere near as flexible as a DV6. In fact I found the the range of drag on the low en on DS's to be inadequate. You couldn't lower it enough to get it nice and loose like you could with the sachtlers, the low end still had too much drag on it. If you want range and variability, go with the sacthler. And if you can somehow manage, I would go with the DV6, but that's my personal opinion after playing with them side by side. I decided to go with the Miller legs and the DV6 head (did not care for the sachtler legs). Yup, had to pay through the nose for that custom configuration, but all in the name of the search for the perfect gear.

opcode, you have what i would have found to be an ideal combo as well. but for exceeding my budget. i work for an engineering company and my boss doesn't appreciate the difference of a $100 or $900 head. people here just think that a tripd is some cheap thing you buy at Frys or Best Buy to hold you camera steady while you do lame lock down shots.

i ended up scoring a set of Bogen 532ART sticks for $900 on B&H, they were demo models, and 503 head for about $350. :)
