Hoverboards??

Be creative with your shots. Never goto a full body shot. Show feet/board closeups and adhere the board to the feet. Then show facial CU's.

Rotoing would be very difficult.

Hoverboards

Hey there, have you watched the special features on the BTTF discs? They explain how the did the hoverboards. You have to plan out your shots according to the technique used. For the shots of the boards, the board prop was literally srewed to Michael's shoe, leaving one foot free to "push". Then, for shots above the waist or knees or even the full body shot where the boards behind the bushes Michael was just on a regular skateboard skating on plywood "paths" that were laid out over the grass. Watch the features if you can, it's actually very simple once you see how its done. Very little used wires and such. You can get away with a lot.

Hmm... well i dont have any access to the discs are there any clips on youtube etc.??? I couldnt find any

well its not exactly hoverboards but the effect is amazing from (girl skateboards, Yeah Right) http://video.google.com/videoplay?d...=36&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=4

I assume however they did this effect, it involved lots of time and work.

i know in star wars for the hovercraft scene they put mirrors on the bottom of the car to reflect the sand and whatnot underneath ( i think this was in the originals) old tech, but it might work good. It sounds easier then Rotoscoping.

Most of what I thought of David already said, never show the whole body that's the real key to the illusion. Even in Back to the Future most of the hover-boarding sequence is only from the waste down or the waste up. Of course they had lots of money for complicated effects shots, of the day, like throwing the boards down and full body and board views. However to save time and money lots of the shots are done from the knees down.

I recommend selling the audience, the first few shots have to look realistic and perfect. Only film the knees down or the knees up. After you're a few shots in and the audience has bought the illusion if you have to do a full body shot prop the board unto of a brick or too make sure it's in the grass this will help hide the brick. Play around with the angles and lighting. If it's well lit, you find a nice angle, and the shot only lasts for a few seconds the bricks will be almost invisible. Of course if you can't make a full body shot convincing it's better to stick to what will look the most realistic.

ya but there has to be a way to show a full body shot in editing right? Like what if i just took a green screen and put a brick on the floor and covered it with the green screen then set the board on top of that and shot it couldnt i just key that out and make it look real?

Oh yeah, my way was less time consuming but not as awesome looking. The green screen works well I'd recommend shooting everything on a green screen the bricks and the background then just key in some footage then add a slight hover board shadow (if the lighting in the shot is appropriate), with AF.

For some reason I did not think of green screen.

lol well thats ok ill try it if i can find the time. Also i use a really crappy green screen hat is plastic... Actually, it shouldnt even be called a green screen because it is a table cloth. But i do have an official blue screen but i cant seem to get it to work. Any thoughts on what might be wrong?

By official you mean? Something like this?? Also what program are you using to composite it?

No not that official it is just a sort of stretchy material that works really well and i use Powerdirecor 6 to composite it. I no, i no "whats Powerdirector 6?" it just my editing program.
