My HVX is giving me an ulcer! noise? low res? Argh!

I am not trying to start a negative thread by any means. I would like to convey what has become a big frustration for me with my HVX. I have had it since Feb 3rd so I am not new to it. I have seen the threads regarding noise and I have kept out of them. I did not have an HD tv until just 30 days ago so all the footage I reviewed was on the computer LCD and I just ignored the perceived noise.

Upon finally viewing the footage on my HDTV (28" CRT) I was surprised at how much of the noise I saw was still visible when viewed on it. The other surprise was that the 720P footage didn't look all that hi def to me. I mean it does look better than SD but it doesn't seem to have that wow factor that HD usually gives. Even switching to 1080 24PA didn't really make it shine.

The noise is almost always in areas of shadow or gradients where the the light is not bright enough to create a clean image but not dark enough to disappear. I have convinced myself that I am just being anal over it and decided to say "screw it" and just shoot good footage and ignore the noise as nobody would notice it anyway.

Well I did a shoot with the HVX for our local church that entailed children gather around table coloring easter eggs. This was pro bono as I wanted to test out the camera under controlled lighting. The scene was very well lit and quite frankly overlit but I was trying to avoid noise. I shot it and edited it together with no CC. I used no gain the default F6 setting.

I showed it to a few close friends who are not technical but are familiar with my work in the past so they at least have some expectations of what it is going to look like.

After a few minutes my wife says "why is it so noisy?".

I about choked. I had been convincing myself that I was making too much of it.

She said "This doesn't look as clean as the footage you shot with your old XL2".

I about choked again.

Then someone said "shouldn't your new camera look better than your old one?"

I choked again and explained that the noise was a trade off for having high definition CCDs.

"this is high definition?"

I about screamed. "yes" I replied.

" I knew your camera did hi def but I thought this was SD to tape. That's what it looks like. Shouldn't hi-def look really clean?"

Man I wanted to scream! I have had this feeling all along that the image didn't look very hi def. I had this feeling all along that the noise was me being paranoid. I had finally convinced myself that it is a non issue.

And now 2 out of 3 people (non techies) watching had made comments on the noise and that it looked like SD. WTF?

My frustration comes from choosing Panasonic over the other due to the DVCPRO-HD benefits. Which feels like a wash because I feel like footage is compromised before it ever reaches the encoding stage. When color correcting it gets all mucked up very quick. It doesn't seem as robust as I thought. Of course I have invested in the P2 workflow as a result and find that all the troubles of dumping P2 cards and backing up and archiving are not being balanced out by immaculate footage. Often times I see HD100 clips or XL-H1 clips and think they look cleaner and less noisy.....despite being HDV. I also chose the HVX200 because of its potential to be a better low light camera than the other cameras and there overcramped CCDs. At this moment I will say honestly that this camera is at it's weakest in low light settings. Not darkrooms mind you...but scenes that are lit dramatically with combinations of well lit areas and shadows to create dramatic lighting.

I have even downloaded some of the raw m2t files posted by pappas from the H1 and Hd-100 and edited and color corrected and found it to hold up well and not be noisy. Am I missing something here?

I love the HVX because of the wide angle lens, the "mojo" and it's ease of use. But I am finding that many scenes that are well lit to just a tiny bit dark are coming out noisy and looking lower res than I believe HD cameras should look. In all fairness some outside shots look amazingly crisp and clear....but I don't shoot that much outside stuff.

Are the other HD cameras really cleaner and sharper? Cause at this point I feel sick saying this but I am not getting that "wow" feeling when watching HD footage from the camera. In fact....I popped in a DVD of some XL2 footage I shot last year and it looked darn sharp......I guess I was expecting too much of HD?
I felt more wowed with my XL2 footage over my old DVX. I could clearly see a cleaner sharper 16x9 DV in that case. Where I am now I just don't feel like I am getting the "bang" for the "buck".

Sorry for the long post. I am just feeling a little sick to my stomach over the investment I have made and seeing problems in these areas. Anyone have any words of wisdom for my troubled soul?

:)

icicle22,
this just off the top of my head (I don't own a HVX), but are sure that HDTV you have is 1) good, and 2) properly set-up?
Might sound basic, and I apologize, but it might be something as simple as that...
Oh, and how are you feeding the HDTV?

I think it has to be your display. I've been watching stuff on my consumer Westinghouse 37" LCD TV (1080i) and it looks fabulous. That's with total factory settings as well. Experimentation has made even more appealing images.

Icicle. Have you compared your camera to another HVX of anyone that you know? There has been a reported problem with another camera user on DVX. Could possibly be the problem with yours.

Yes, it's not good in low light, but if you have a well light area or dramatic lighting there shouldn't be much noise in that stuff. There isn't on my HVX at all.

I can sympathize with your pain.. It was something for me to discover too when I got my HVX but when I figured out the situations wasn't so bad at all. Also, I'll be able to tell you quantifiably next week if the JVC is better and/or noisy in low-light situations as I'm going to be shooting with it. I do think that they are all somewhat comparable in bad situations... but time will show all as more info gets out there.

Does kind of make you wonder though if there is something else in the works as a firmware update. I'd go for -3 on the gain fo sho'.

The HDTV I have is not the top of the line no. But I can say that when I watch broadcast or cable HD it looks amazing. It basically blows me away. I am not expecting that level of "wow" as I realize the equipment involved in producing broadcast HD is way beyond the HVX.

I view footage in 2 ways.

1. Direct from P2 in camera out the component cables to the back of the TV.
2. I encode video to .wmv or .mpg and play it back via a Buffalo Link Theater. 20mbps stream that is the equivalent to over 2 times DVD encoding.

I see no difference between the 2. I realize the P2 is DVCPRO-HD so it should look better. What I am saying is there is no new noise introduced as a result of the compression and the clarity of the image stays intact even when encoded to wmv or mpg2.

Also vidled, I used your lights on some test footage and it looks great. There is still too much noise in the areas where the light falls of. But I can't go around lighting everthing flat now, can I?

I have also copied some of the m2t files posted by pappas onto a DVD and the Link Theater plays them directly. This image is very clean and comes a lot closer to having the "wow" factor of HDTV. At least for me.

You see, I feel I could live with the tradeoff of the HVX200 being not as razor sharp as the other cameras for better low light and lower noise. But as it is the tradeoff is not worth it. I see more nosie and poor low light performance along with a HD picture that up until now has failed to really look all that amazing. Other than it's revolutionary workflow and variable frame rates the camera seems like a bit of an under achiever.....strictly speaking of image and light sensitivity.

Well, you could get more VIDLEDs for the shadows! :)

But really: sorry to hear the HVX woes then, hopefully this gets resolved. Like mentioned above, maybe compare it to another cam? Best of luck with a positive outcome!

Icicle- My limited experience with my HVX is that it simply has a narrower envelope than some of the others but when you hit that sweet spot you’ll remember why you went DVCPRO-HD instead of something else. I would suspect if non-technical people, and your wife are seeing a problem that there is one . . . now all that needs to be done is narrow it down to the camera, display, or operator.

Don’t give up the ship . . . it’s way too early for that. Although it doesn’t sound like it in this case -- noise, when viewed is somewhat subjective and we are completely unable to view yours. When you get to a place where you are able to post a (full size) frame grab would you please do so?

Hang in there brother, everthing's going to be all right.

Okay, this is gonna sound stupid, but when I first got my HVX, I put it on F6 and started shooting. I was very unhappy with the noise, look, etc... Then, I read somewhere on these boards that Barry had shot a certain thing with the stock F5 setting and, as I could see for myself by the footage (stills?), it looked fantastic. I got my camera, switched it to F5, and have never looked back. I know this doesn't make any sense, but I'd love to have you try it on F5.

That's a good point about working with the scene files.

I read all the threads here pretty extensively, test a lot of stuff, and then finally set up my own scene file for the levels I liked the best.

If you are just using the "stock" settings, you will not get the best results IMHO.

Chris

I've tweeked my F5 since, but for some reason, it was so much better than F6 right out of the gate. BTW, CMessineo, your tub stuff looked really good. Nice work.

Try these settings for F6 and see what you get.

Chris,
Your shot looked really nice! At first glance it seems much cleaner than mine but stills can be a little deceiving. It is sometimes the moving grain that draws your eyes to the noise so I will not make a definitive statement yet.

Thanks to everyone for responding and not ripping me a new one! I am just trying to work around the cameras limitations and to this point it doesn't feel like it is working! I went from my DVX100 to the XL2 and found that the XL2 was not very good in low light but was a lot cleaner. So working around the XL2 limitations got me a cleaner image....even at 6db. So I sold my XL2 and got an HVX and I am finding it is even more limiting. With the XL2 when there was a lack of light the image just went flat...lost a lot of color but didn't get noisy in the dark areas.

I never thought I would see the day that I longed for the XL2 light sensitivity! But right now I am having to overcompensate with lights to try to get a non-noisy image.

And just to be fair when I try to shoot some candid footage under normal house light.....forgetaboutit! Noisy and dark. Now in comparison my XL2 footage in those same settings looks like it was lit up like a runway! And cleaner too at 6db gain.

Oh....the price we all must pay for def.!!!!!

:)

By the way I have tried f5 and it seems to crush the blacks severely. Granted you don't see noise in shadows as much but you don't see anything either. It is in the gradients that the noise appears the most.

If you look at the first link in the first post in that thread you can watch the footage. It isn't full res (I just don't have the bandwith), but I think you will see the grain is pretty minimal and actually sort of film-like.

As for the scene files, you really need to play with them and customize to your taste. It takes some effort, but it really pays off.

CMessineo has the right idea with the still/clips for comparison. From reading a number of threads here now, it seems like a possibility that there are some HVXs out there which don't perform as well as others for whatever reason. And there's alot of evidence pointing at some rushing at Panasonic as well: the difficulty of finding an HVX up to this point and discussions of limitied supplies, or the whole "secret frame rates" thing and how Barry suggested Panasonic might not have had the time to certify all the frame rates.

Regardless, it would save everyone from similar ulcers if there was some ability for HVX users to compare stills and clips to a couple "standard, correct" HVXs under similar conditions which most people have access to. Have any of the moderators posted clips or stills done with their units in low light conditions (standard house lighting, etc.)? I'd be interested to see how my HVX holds up as well.

Maybe you really should try to get with someone else who has an HVX and is happy with the quality.

I agree with dregenthal, this is all very subjective stuff. Posting a still would really help us decide whether we should be ripping you a new one. ;-)

I think I speak for everyone when I say my heart goes out to you.

As lame as this sounds I haven't done a damn thing to fix my problem (i'm in the office today) but by venting about it on here and having everyone respond so positively I am feeling better already! Lame huh? I am still going to look into improving the image but I have a fresh outlook and feel I am approaching it positively, whereas earlier I was a bit negative. (could you tell??)

Thanks to all for the therapy. The couch has been comfortable.

:)
