House of a 1000 Corpses

Allright, Sorry to crash the lovefest, but I thought I would throw in one dissenting opinion.
First off I am a huge horror geek and watch pretty much everything that i can get my hands on from the genre. I agree with the preivious posts in that what passes for horror these days is often, well horrible (not in a good way). I went to see House of a Thousand Corpses opening night because i thought it was going to be pretty much what John described ( J.H.- your description is soo much better than the actual film, for a sec. i was like hey it does sound cool-no wait a minute it sucks!). I was sorely dissapointed.
I liked the opening 10 minutes and the scene where Sheri Moon does that musical number. I liked that Sid Haig and Karen Black were in it. The rest is just derivitive mumbo jumbo with flashy techniques to distract the audience from how week the plot and mood were. It seemed very MTV (no surprise there). I am not a fan of RZ's music but I sense that we probably have simmilar interests, and I enjoy the aesthetic of his videos and albums. I n this case I would suggest viewers rent The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Nekromantic, Zombie, and all the other GREAT films that RZ pilfered from.
Now I gotta try and get on this DVX fest wagon!

Hi Hooligan

First of all; hell yes. You must gtet it on the DVX Zombie Fest; there's going to be a DVD with this one; so it's a must have/participate.

Secondly; on Ho1Kc

I can totally see why someone would either not 'get' House or outright just think it sucks.

For me it was such a refreshing change. Whether it pilfered (approriated; homaged) from the 70's is not at all an issue for me.

Again with the opening scene: I loved the entire sequence.
The Sheri Moon: Song was errily cool and Sheri was looking Gothicly hot.
The Abduction Sequnce: When the dude with the BIG HEAD on looks over at the moving car; I was like "Ewwwwww. Cool!"

Most importantly; I recognize that this is RX first foray into filmmaking. That for me holds a special kind of 'geekness' ya know? I relaize it is amatuer and freshmen in attempt and that is part of the charm for me I admit.

The script is weak indeed but I admit I do not need a perfectly structured story for this particular film; I'm taking it at face value and just sitting back for entertaiment.

I did not really get into the 3rd act terrbily much. The 'Going to Hell and the weird sht' lost me.

But I did like the very last shot when Haig picks the girl up; that was nice.

Anyway; thanks for chiming in! And get in on the fest!

. I don't care

not a fan of Rob Zombies music but i loved this film. Of course any film featuring Sid Haig is tops IMO!

John I just always assumed YOU had seen this movie! Warning more than one viewing may be an indication of declining mental health!

I made myself watch the Texas Chainsaw remake and I have to admit I liked it as well or maybe(dare I commit blasphemy) better than the original.

I understand/ agree with Hudsons comments. The film is pikey. It harks back to the days of Phantasm/ Critters and more recently Dusk-Till-Dawn. The comedy-horror, a fantastic rollercoster ride of stupid jokes/ monsters, well executed special FX with just a hint of stylish directing/ set peaces. For his first film, pleasantly surprised, not as surprised as when baby got changed into her pee-jays (my eyes nearly popped out of my head.) The third act did loose itself and became over indulgent, but overall it was a ripping yarn. Spaulding was tip-top crazy. As a lifelong horror fan this type of film certainly has its place and I would like to see more of them.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it here, but the shot where the camera flies into the air as the main bad guy waits...and waits...and waits...to shoot...and then when he finally does...and a little puff of smoke raises into the air...that shot is great...

Anyone remember what I'm talking about? I remember watching this with my friend, and he was like this sucks...but when that part happened I was like WOW...that was great, the director held off the shot for sooo long!!! he even said yeah, that was pretty good...

That was the only good thing about the movie...otherwise it was very tiresome and annoying. That doesn't mean the next one won't be good.

Well put. My sentiments exactly. (Yes, and the part of Sheri Moon in her PJ's; )

This is a specual kind of horror film; rockabilly, carnival fun-shoue ride, texas chainsaw, 70's grindhouse. If you like Slaems Lot, Texas Chainsaw, Phantasm, Killer Clowns From Outerspace. It has a touch of Italian Giallo; it feels a bit like Children shouldnt play with Dead Things, The Last House on the Left...........

I'm thinking you either get this or you dont. And thats okay.

The last house on the left, imop is nastier. It messes with your head.
Killer Clowns is more on this level.
We forgot reanimator, bad taste, its alive, frankenhooker....evil dead is also in that vein.

There have been really good interviews with RZ in both Rue Morgue and Fangoria about The Devils Rejects lately.

To summarize the interview, Rob basically says that this film will make 1000 corpses look like a nursery rhyme. Even some of the actors/actresses were getting physically ill from some of the sick mutilation **** they had to do.

I can't wait. :)

Digging this out of the archives. This was on IFC last night and having never seen it, I felt compelled to watch it. I don't know WHAT to think. While I found some things well shot and horrific, others just seemed amateurish and self indulgent. Horror and gore for the sake of horror and gore. Whatever... The ending...I knew immediately upon seeing the dude's face that she was in trouble, didn't she look at him? If she had, she would have run like hell.

This movie didn't leave me with any lasting impact. I saw it and nothing about it really calls for a second viewing. I didn't see it originally because of RZ's involvement, i.e. can't stand his "music." I liked the movie more than his "music."

It wasn't a bad movie, but I can't really say it was good either. I think the problem for me is that I never cared about anyone in the movie. I felt like a voyeur watching horrific things happen to people I could give a **** about. No one got away? Oh, well, what's on next? Based on this movie, I personally won't waste any money on Devil's Rejects.

Blaine, while I sort of agree with your review of HO1000C, I honestly think that TDR is completely different (I have it on the DVD player now in the background).

HO1000C is an homage to Zombies favorite horror films, especially Texas Chainsaw. There is nothing wrong with that, but TDR proves that he is a great filmmaker, and I don't use the word great lightly.

HO1000C was best for the dialogue and allusions to Texas Chainsaw whereas TDR stands completely on it's own as a great film.

So, Yankee, I guess the question I need to ask is: Is there anyone in the picture I can have a rooting interest in? Or is it a case of: the group goes on a killing spree and we don't care. Just trying to get a handle on it. I'm willing to give it a chance if there is a point to it. Even an interesting story. Perhaps I should read Hudson's review on it before counting it out?

Edit: My daughter just let me know she has a copy of TDR so I won't have to spend anything on it. Therefore, I guess I'll be checking it out tomorrow.

I didnt see 1000 Corpses, but I watched TDR tonight. I'm not HUGE into horror, and this was just a gritty nasty movie to watch.

But it had a happy ening. :)
