No way, all of ours are in the 400 to 500 range and still going strong! Not that I know when they die, but I'm trying to channel the honda longevity gods.
The manual indicates around 1000 hours for head replacement. This of course depends on treatment of the machine. The big questions would be have you re-used tapes in it. Switched tape brands often, used in a smoky or dusty environment, etc.
For instance, a camera with 600 hours which was babied by a studio user with the same tape brands, etc. And never used a deck (i.e. shuttling) will probably be in better condition that one that has been used to film heavy metal bands every Wednesday night in a smoky bar that has only 300 hours.
