Hours on DVX100

Does anyone know how the DVX hours are calculated? Is it how long the camera is on, how long it is recording??? Just curious if anyone knows.

Thanks

however long the heads are running for.

when you turn the camera on the heads are actually running. When it goes to standby its on, and you hear it when its off. when you record they are running and when you are VTR'ing it, its running.

Surely not!

If you only ever used P2 cards what would be the point of the Hour meter ticking up just because the camera was turned on.

My guess is there would have to be a tape installed and running past the heads.

Then what do I know...

Does anyone have a definitive answer?
This question pops up quite a bit, and I agree, we need a definitive answer.

Someone had even stated that the clock was running (hour meter) as long as there was a tape and a battery in the camera. Does that sound right?

Here is an informative thread of PM's with Jan_Crittenden, Panasonic Product Manager about the "hour meter" function. Courtesy by Jan_Crittenden:

The thread is in reverse order - start at the bottom.

Does it mean that with a tape inside the meter would run both, recording, VCR, standby AND shut off because of time-out?
Would it also be counting hours no matter what until it is either switched off or the tape has been removed?

Am I getting it now? (crossing fingers)

My possible buyer is confused and so it seems the whole forum is.

Some people say it records anything as long as there is a tape inside (also when the camera goes into "save modus" switched to "turn off").

Others say it's just record and VTR that adds to the meter and that playing with the camera with no tape inside do not add to the total time.

I hope you can help me so that the next user of the camera can get a realistic and fair idea of the value of the camera.

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards

The hours add up only when there is a tape in the transport and the power is on. That said, you can use a DXV100(A)(B) without adding any hours to the meter at all. Just hook up another miniDV camcorder as an external recording deck and do all your recording on that. No tape in the DVX, no wear on the heads and no time on the DVX hour meter.

Here's how:
