Hour usage on hour meter?

Another question: do hours accumulate on the DVX-100A only when recording, or in standby mode while fiddling, etc????

i thought hrs accumulate when it was powered on with a tape in it and also when recording but hrs did not accumulate when it was powered on WITHOUT a tape in it.

how do I set the time clock and user bit. what numbers do I put in there? I already read the manual but that is one of the few things that didn't make sense to me
