Hour meter wrong? Monitor v/s TV?

Hi ,

I am shooting a feature with my new DVX100a. I have shot 7 PANASONIC AY-DVM63MQ tapes but my hour meter shows 29 hours. Assuming each tape is about 1 hr it should be only 7 hours. Why is hour meter showing 29 hours then?
I have been using Tape Protect option on my camera so it does not power off but goes to a standby.

Also my monitor stopped working yesterday. I use DVRack on my laptop but I want another monitor. So can I use a TV to instead of getting a new monitor. What is the difference between the two?

Best regards

J.

Have you been using the camera as a deck to playback tapes when capturing, or doing lots of search shuttling? If so, those hours will also be on it.

Main differences are a TV is designed to HIDE video errors and artifacts. Thus they are overscanned (the edges of picture are not seen), they often have added edge sharpening, and video "enhancement" processing which can't be turned off. The inputs may be horrible Scarts rather than professional BNCs, maybe only composite in, the resolution will be less, colour balance generally hard/impossible for user to change or calibrate. No "blue only" for setting saturation, aspect ratio switching limited/automatic/non-existent.

That said, it's much better than nothing and gives enough of an idea that the footage shot will probably be fine. Just be aware that it is not accurate for critical framing, precise focussing, or colour rendition.

I have not been using it as a tape playback deck. I know that would put hours on it. Does it also put on hours when it is in standy mode using tape protect?

Check the hours meter after your next couple of 63 min tapes. Does it increment by 2hours or does it report more?
