Hour Meter Info

Ok, so I just wanted to get some questions answered about the hour meter, as I just purchased a dvx100a. My questions are:

-when does the hour meter actually start tallying time?
-leaving the battery on the camera while it's off does that tally onto the hour meter?
-how many hours should I go up to before spending 3-500$ on a professional head cleaning? (I will be using only sony premiums)
-When replacing the heads will the hour meter stay the same or will it start back at zero?

I know that these questions may have already been answered, and I would usually just do a search but right now I'm in a time crunch at work, so I just made this topic.

The head hours start counting when the heads are in contact with the tape and the camera is on. When the camera is turned off, in standby mode or the tape is taken out, the meter stops counting.

so basically the rule of thumb is if, you have a tape in the camera whether it be recording or not, the hour meter will be tallying time.

also thanks for the quick reply.

I assume this is a new camaera you purchased. If not, before using ANY tapes find out what brand was used the majority of the time and stick to that brand. If this is a new camera pick your posion but stay with it. Sony is an excellent choice.

Switching tape brands is a NO NO. The lubricants on each brand are different and NOT compatible which will leave you resorting to sending it in for a head cleaniing. My advice to you is NEVER use head cleaning tapes. Stay with one brand and obseve correct warm up and cool down periods before used to aclimate the camera before using tapes and follow all usage recomendation in the manual.

These are not suggestions just for panasonic but with any high end camera with a tape transport.

Hope this helps.
