Hot off the presses! Zeiss 55mm f/1.4 Otus Distagon T* Lens for Canon EF Mount

Looks very rectilinear, which is nice. I'm curious to see it up against the Zeiss ZE Planar T* 50mm f/1.4. Comparisons to $400 photo lenses are just unfair.

Not to mention the fads that swing between imperfect and perfect lenses. It is all a sway of value.

The ZE planar exhibits purple and green when wide open (especially backlit details), and it has barrel distortion. Still one of my favorite 50mm. But it is not for everything.

It should easily out perform the Zeiss ZE Planar T* 50mm f/1.4 at f/1.4 and f/2.0, as it's a lens designed to reach optimum performance at full aperture.

At f/2.8 and smaller I wouldn't expect a lot of difference between these two. ( I owned a Zeiss ZF Planar T* 50mm f/1.4 for two years and eventually sold it because I could not stand how soft it was at f/1.4 and f/2.0 when used with my GH2 camera )

4k for no aperture ring???

I have news for Zeiss: gaining one stop or two on a lens doesn't mean that much in these days of high ISO cameras like the 5D3.

Well, it's not like they are discontinuing the other lenses and replacing it with this one. What kind of primes are you looking for (and if they already exist, which ones do you like?) Thanks

Have to say I love Canon EF lenses. The 16-35 f2.8, 50mm f2.5 and 70-200 f4 are all great.

The ef 50mm f2.5 is tack sharp and is a macro as well. It's dirt cheap and I bet would stand up nicely against the 4k 55mm Zeiss. Sure it's two stops slower but as I said the sensitivity of the 5D3 is so good that it isn't an issue for me.
