Hot AF100A body

Coming home from a shoot yesterday, I discovered that accidentally left the camera on standby for 5 hours. I picked it up out of the bag and boy was the body hot, much like how a hot mug of coffee would feel. I decided to slap a lens on it and see if it would still run and it did without much difference, downloaded the clips from the SD card and everything is still intact.

I'm not sure how it affected my gear but is there I should watch out for?

You should always remove the battery when stored in a case. The AF100 will become hot if trapped inside a bag. You might not get any malfunction right away but it does put a strain on parts over time if you do this now and then.

I can relate. I put my AC90 in its backpack and forgot to turn it off. It used-up the entire battery and was quite warm. Charged the battery and let the camera breathe and no ill effects. Good practice to remove the battery when in a case.

All of the integrated circuits are affected. Heat is the enemy of ICs. They are rated to perform for a given lifetime. The longer they are hot, the shorter their life.

I've done faillure predictions on equipment which has to be highly reliable. Goals are typically to have the failure rate be about 1.5% of the units fail in the first 6 months and about .7% per year in the years following. I expect commercial equipment has similar goals.

Don't worry about it. It may have affected the life, but it has a long life.

[edit] Oh, and heat is certain death for batteries. Heat dramatically affects a batteries lifetime. For Li-on batteries, above 60degrees celcius, life is short.
