Host Mode

It's a moot point now, but there are battery-powered 2.5" FW enclosures available for about 100 bux. For me, I'm all about 1-2 hour shots, they're documentary interviews, and they are of course unscripted. I can imagine carrying a case with 10 drives to my hotel, then going out during the day with the HVX and a drive or two, and be set for all the interviews for the day. Much cheaper than either a firestore or a cineporter. If we're talking 7200 RPM drives, I would imagine they'd be plenty fast, and hardy enough to handle international travel.

There are a few menu presses to get the camera to offload to a hard disk. It's not painful, but it's not a one-button-press situation either. It takes a little time too, depending on the speed of your external hard disk; guess about a gig a minute. It's more convenient to have a different device to offload to -- we used a laptop, and that was great because it never tied the camera up.

Thanks for answering, Barry.

An accessable autodump button would have been peachy.

The need to dump more often (did I just say that?) puts a 4 gig p2 at a slight disadvantage than an 8 gig p2.

But money's a concern... so my mind's made up:

Hvx200
4 gig card
self powered firewire drive
notebook computer

Later:

Firestore or Spec Comm's hard drive.

Thanks!
