We want to demonstrate that we can actually tell a story, so we choose to do a teaser scene from the beginning of the movie and use that as our trailer.

Re: Horrors of War - trailer/scene

Looks great, was it all shot on the DVX100? Also what program did you use for the muzzle flash? I've never been able to get it right. Incidentally, why was this post moved?

Re: Horrors of War - trailer/scene

I believe this was shot on a mixture of 8mm, 16mm, and 35mm film. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Re: Horrors of War - trailer/scene

Oh, I explored your website a little and realize why you were moved. You do realize that this is a Panasonic DVX users group dont you. All footage posted should be 24P footage from the DVX100. By the way the film looks pretty cool.

Re: Horrors of War - trailer/scene

The "MAking OF" was entirely DVX100A footage....

that's why I posted it here.

The clips itself were 35mm/16mm and super 8 film.

The muzzle flashes are real. They are practicals from the blanks the re-enactors used.

Re: Horrors of War - trailer/scene

Sorry about the move sonnyboo

I didnt catch the making of and only saw the trailer/teaser and fx plates. The film look pretty cool though! :)

Re: Horrors of War - trailer/scene

No problems at all...

I'm in love with the look & quaity of the DVX100 A. I'll have another full blown DVX100 short on display in a few weeks that I produced.

I don't understand the question...

Re: Horrors of War - trailer/scene

Well, I'm impressed. I especially liked the composites of the burning building, the soldiers walking across the field, and the removal of forest.

Re: Horrors of War - trailer/scene

THis is very impressive considering the budget and it is a subject matter I am into.

The actual flames on the buildings too me are a bit much as they look CG and do not serve to accentuate the shot. I think it would work better MINUS the actual flames.

In fact, the same goes for the 'fireball' when the plane goes down. I rather see a flash and plume of smoke but the fire ball exon detracts from me.

The comabt scenes are actually pretty cool. The sound effects are great with the little clips popping off.

Keep us up to date on this one.

BTW - My take on the CGI is that less is more.

Re: Horrors of War - trailer/scene

Saving Private Ryan meets Hellboy meets Resident Evil

Great start! I liked the look and feel of the film (it’s got that SPR and Band of Brothers thing going on). The uniforms, equipment and weapons looked accurate. I especially liked that excellent scene of the crippled B17 bomber flying overhead with a ME262 in pursuit. Nice touch. However, I do agree with John, the CGI explosion did not feel right. I would either do away with the explosion altogether (and have the aircraft disappearing into the horizon) or add additional layers (i.e. smoke, flying debris, etc.) to complete the effect.

Okay, a few other minor nitpicks.

First, the trailer was eerily similar to the SPR scene (ref: the assault on the machine gun position vicinity of a cow pasture). As such, it sends the signal to the audience that this film lacks originality. Additionally, the Captain smoking the cigarette is too Hollywood cliché and would not have been appropriate considering the close proximity of the German position.

Second, the actors (soldiers) look like they came straight out of boot camp. They looked more like those 12 inch GI Joe figurines that you can buy down at Toys-R-Us rather than battle hardened and experienced veterans. I would have dirtied up the clothes a bit to give it a used and funky appearance. Prior to filming, I would have had the participants do some good old fashion physical exercises for about 15 or 20 minutes to build up some nice sweat (mixed in with some dirty grime – especially in the facial area). It would have also been a nice touch to have had the actors grow a three or four day old beard.

Next, these soldiers are on a special mission, but yet they are walking in an open field (even though there is a wood line nearby). Oh and another thing, in the clip these four American GI’s with bolt-action rifles are going up against a German reinforced MG34 section in semi-prepared defensive positions. I know Tom Hanks and his crew did it, but in reality that is absolutely insane. Luckily, your Germans reminded me of Imperial Stormtroopers – can’t hit ****.

Okay, after all that, I’ll be the first to admit that telling the story and getting the look and feel of the scene was more important than getting bogged down on some text book minutia, but with a competent technical advisor (or anyone with military experience and a decent understanding of terminology and tactics) you can significantly raise the bar of authenticity of the subject your are portraying. My .02 cents.

Good luck! Viel Spass.

Re: Horrors of War - trailer/scene

Some good points Ranger.

I have to second the 'pieces of debris' falling off. It would be cool to the plane 'disentengrating' over the horizon. I also noticed the lack of 'wear and tear' on the uniforms and lack of sweat/grime/dirt. Jeez, I go out and play paintball and after the first match I look like something out of Band of Brothers :P

Not sure if you went this route, but always a good idea to bring in an expert; military advisor. They can help with authenticity of not only the locations, formations and fight sequences but the general look of the soldier.

And to be redundant: LESS IS MORE is CGI. The effects should serve to enhance the story. ---------------------------------------------------------------- IMHO .

As far as the Horror Plotline? F*cking love it! Kind of Castle Wolfenstein.

Re: Horrors of War - trailer/scene

Experts are great to have on board. You might want to think about bringing in both a military advisor and a historian.

Ranger: you sure know your stuff :)

You make a good point. However, I don't think it would be impossible. Certainly insane but with the right timing and surprise I imagine it could be pulled off. I've always found from my personal experience that moving formations and surprising moves are worth more than gold in combat. To qualify my statement though: you would have to move FAST and be perfectly accurate. Once the initial shock is over your chance at winning fades as well. Possible but insane. Sounds like the sort of thing for a special mission :D

Re: Horrors of War - trailer/scene

Not at all impossible.

Isn't there a scene in Band of Brothers where they take out a fortified German position at Brecourt Manor? That is based on fact. They take out 4 artillery positions with a small squad.

This is an MG34 BTW

I dunno -- B-17s brought their crews home with a lot more damage than that . . . and the engines had fire suppressors.

Re: Horrors of War - trailer/scene

Thanks all.

The CGI is not final at all and it was done by 3D animator Don Drennan, where I am very happy with most of his work. The explosion is my only realy dissatisfaction and, as previously stated, not final.

The WWII re-enactors are all historians and many of them are current military or former military.

I think the Zombie Nazi at the end was our first clue this is not about exact historical accuracy... it's escapist entertainment. The History Channel is not really interested...

;D

Re: Horrors of War - trailer/scene

What does the History Channel know? :D

Well, Im interested in this. Sounds like a blast!

Completely agree. Bold and audacious maneuver coupled with the element of surprise and aggressive action is always the preferred solution when the situation presents itself. In the trailer though, for me at least, the whole scene seemed kind of hokey and my suspension of disbelief was lost.
