horizontal lens flares?

Hey guys,

I'm looking to get that horizontal lens flare effect on my GH-1, without spending 10k on an anamorphic lens. I know there have been some posts about this, and I've google searched, but so far I've heard many things suggested but not found a solution. For example, someone suggested a "streak filter" which I can't seem to find anywhere.

Your help is much appreciated! :)

Thanks,

Matt

You may try using a matte box with a clear glass filter inserted. Adjust the matte box so that the filter is not quite parallel to the lens. Then, just out of frame, aim a hard light source toward the lens. Or use a fluorescent tube turned horizontally, it may cause a horizontal flare. Modern lenses (like the kit lens) seem to have anti-flare coating which makes it tougher to get this effect. But the glass filter on the matte box is what would be causing the flare...actually it's more of a reflection.
Also, older manual Nikon and Canon lenses seem to flare more because they have less coating. Keeping your aperture wide open also helps, as the light bounces around inside the lens more.
I have a Canon FD 50mm f1.2 that had a cheap glass filter on it when I bought it. That filter caused some insane flares and ghosting.

There's also the Panasonic anamorphic adapter for the DVX which I know at least one person here was using with the GH1/G1.

Cheers for this, I might try this. Will I lose any resolution or image quality with this adapter? Do you know where one can be got from?

Thanks

Well, when you put extra glass in front of a lens, theoretically there will always be some loss in image quality. I have no idea how much, though.

You can find one on eBay. They go for around $500.
