horizontal blocks in my pans

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? I am getting these thick horizontal blocks that are not in sync with the rest of my footage, like my frames are horizontally disjointed mid-pan. I have used different scene files, lighting conditions, indoor, outdoor, and pan speeds, tripod and hand held. I've watched my footage on regular tv as well as my pc, direct from tape and after capture. ???

Any help is much appreciated.

Re: horizontal blocks in my pans

Does it only happen in pans? What if the subject is moving across the frame but the camera is still? Sounds like it could be a tape transport problem?

Re: horizontal blocks in my pans

so far as I can tell, after looking at different tapes, its just in the pans. What is tape export? The capture process?

Re: horizontal blocks in my pans

Well, I was thinking if the tape is not going through the heads exactly the way it should you might have something like this happening, but then it would be not just pans, although it could be more noticeable during pans since frames change a lot. But that's totally a guess. Can't even call it an educated guess. :)

Re: horizontal blocks in my pans

I am beginning to feel stupid because when I look at the footage frame by frame I cannot isolate it for a grab, although I see it on the screen.

(I'll be the first to say that I am new at all this and dont know alot about what I am doing, but well, I am trying.)

Re: horizontal blocks in my pans

I have the same problem, honestly, and I thought/think it was/is something in my capturing, or whatever. The chroma patterning is not what he's talking about, the lines are about 4-6 pixels in height, and fairly wide. If someone's walking across the screen, it's the width of the person.

I'm fairly certain that you guys are making it more complicated than it is, it's something fundamental that he and I are both screwing up. Whether it's having 29.97 in a 23.98 timeline, or maybe having the [whatever] set to None, when it should be Upper, or Even, or -something- like that, that's my guess anyway.

Again, it doesn't really show up on stills, but on the capture/edit window, and on the DVX, (right thartley?)

Well, I am a "she". ;) But besides that, what I am seeing is generally blocks or "glitchy-looking" horizontal blips (for lack of more extensive videoesque language) that stagger thru my frame. And no, I dont see it in the single frames. I will keep experimenting and see what I come up with. :)

Thanks...

Re: horizontal blocks in my pans

Talk about posting a screen shot! heh! Yea, I can try that, but it'll be later today. Work beckons. :( Unfortunately...

Re: horizontal blocks in my pans

Are you shooting in 24p?
24pa?
24pn?
What software are you using
Wwhat are you monitoring your footage on:
Camera LCD?
or Computer Monitor?
All of these can have an effect on how the video is seen.
I think a good way to see how my camera motion and lighting is looking is to burn test footage to DVDs.
Viewing on a progressive scan DVD player always looks better to me.
If your shooting in 24pa then burn a 24p DVD.
