Hope Solo intvw w/ SuperSpeeds

Great work, Bill. I think super-speeds wide open are terribly soft, but for HD interviews, especially women, it can be quite flattering on the skin texture.

It also helps to have a great looking subject, too! :)

I agree on both points, Ryan (about the softening, and how it can be used to benefit certain shots).

Here's where the look evolved from: Varicam 2700 w/ HD Fujinon lenses, same lighting setup:

Wow, a much better look than the Varicam...and at a much lower data rate, as well. SxS is totally acceptable for a web-based campaign like this.
If you don't mind, can you tell us a little about the lighting setup? Any camera matching issues? Your background also remained remarkably consistent throughout...a little luck there?

Sure, JC.

We ND'ed the windows, I think I went with .6, and flew in a twelve-by to flag the sun, so we were doing our best to control the b/g. From time to time we stopped down for a minute to re-position the twelve-by.

Key light was an ARRI 1.2k HMI through a 4x4 frame of 216 (or full grid) pushed through an additional four-by of opal, this was camera right.

Fill above the lens was a four bank 2 foot kino. Low fill was the same as the fill over the lens. I usually place this on the opposite side of the key just below the lens. Hair light was a Kino bar-fly positioned outside, camera left, about seven feet high. I also had a passive fill, aka four-by bead board, picking up some bounce camera left.

We used Zeiss 50mm and 85mm SuperSpeeds both at about f/ 1.4 with Schneider classic soft 1/4 on the wide shot and 1/2 on the close up.
180º shutter, 0db, ND filter position 1...I think that's everything.

Thanks for the feedback.

Looks really dope! Personally, I think your DOF, is a little too shallow, but hey, if that's what the client wants, you give it to 'em! Nice work!

Good work, Bill.

Did you shoot any of the other segments in the "Makers" series? If not, do you know if they were shot with F3s?

Thank you,

I've shot quite a bit, there's at least another 30 or 40 interviews that haven't aired yet. I'm not sure what the New York crew has been using but 99% of our stuff was shot on the Panasonic Varicams, I only got to shoot a few with F3's.
