Hooking up the HVX to a LCD?

Hey Guys,
I have a question on what is the best way to hook up the HVX to a LCD display. I have been connecting via componet cables and the image looks pretty poor. Is there a device that I can use to convert the HD signal so I can watch on the LCD with full quality? What are my options for using a HDLink to connect the camera to then into the LCD? I am also working with a G4 laptop and I don't think that I can use a kona or blackmagic card for the HD conversion. I am a bit new to this so any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Jason:

You really only have three options direct from the camera:

1. Composite
2. Y/C (S-VHS connection)
3. Analog Component

You could run the analog component into various digital converters but I can not think of what you would gain by doing so? The HDLink requires an HD/SDI feed on input which the HVX-200 does not feature. The Canon XL-H1 does.

Best,

Dan

The question to ask is, what monitor are you using? The component outputs are putting out live uncompressed high-def video -- it should look anything OTHER than "pretty poor"! Should look fantastic. What are you connecting to?

Thanks for the info. I am hooking up to the Dell 2405 with the componet cables. The picture just doesn't look that sharp and not nearly as good as when it is hooked up to a HDTV set. This may be something that I am doing in terms of monitor set up or camera output options? Thanks again.

First thing to do is go in your Dell's menus and turn off the sharpening (set it to "1"). Then, realize that even though the Dell has component inputs, that doesn't make it a video monitor. It's just not all that good for video. It's a great computer monitor, and it can be used for some video purposes, but it's never going to compare to a proper HD monitor.

Ooh. I am confused! I think hooking up a hires LCD would be a great idea. But...

- Does anyone know of an affordable solution to get the analog HD output of the HVX into an 1920x1200 computer LCD? I don't care about colors, but about resolution (to focus).
- I take it that the analog out of the HVX is the ONLY interface that gives a HD output during filming, right?
- Isn't there something like an analog HD to DVI converter :-D (Well, of course there is, like the Lumagen VisionHDP for a hefty 1500$, but is it good)?
- Has anyone ever got an excellent result from the HVX analog output, or is it possible that the interface itself is of low quality?

Thanks for the info Barry. I'll try setting the sharpness to "1" and see what that does. There is no substitute for a nice HD monitor, I am just trying to explore my options to get the best out of my Dell 2405 while using it with the HVX.

Yes, that is what I did. It cleans up enough to show clients who don't know what they are looking at. But that monitor does highlight the noise and seems to producing it's own noise as well. But once the video goes to an HD file or DVD the results are fantastic.

What is a good field solution other than the dell at this point, esp if you want something that won't pile more noise on top of the image? or something that 's NOT 'not all that good for video'.

I seem to remember holyzoo liking a new hd monitor, but I can't find the review...

We've been using the Panasonic 17" extensively on this infomercial. It's a really, really nice monitor. It's Jay's, so I don't have access to it all that often, but I think I'm gonna pick up my own here pretty soon. The picture is gorgeous, the off-axis still looks very very good, it's fully calibratable, and it has a built-in frame-store and waveform monitor. Jay got some sort of mount that lets it sit directly on a c-stand, which makes it very convenient.

We just got one of the Panny 17" monitors. Barry (or Jay) can you point me in the right direction to find whoever made the C-stand mount for this monitor?

Thanks!
