hoodman or petrol?

Wanting to get a LCD hood for my DVX. Not sure which one might be better...they're both about the same price. The hoodman seems more convenient...two velcro straps...easy on and off...the petrol seems a little more cumbersome to get on and off....does it have any advantages???

Any thoughts? i've read some previous posts on the topic..

Re: hoodman or petrol?

I've got the Hoodman and it's fine. I prefer a fold-up type to the rigid models to save a bit of space, but the rigid ones look nicer.

Re: hoodman or petrol?

I didn't know Hoodman made a hood for a 3.5" screen. I bought the Panasonic hood. It collapses and retains it's shape if needed. Hoodman might be better though.

Re: hoodman or petrol?

The Panasonic is the Petrol, but Panasonic adds an additional plastic hood piece to it. I've got the Panasonic also, and find it quite workable. Never seen the Hoodman though.

Re: hoodman or petrol?

I have the Panasonic, well its actually a 16x9 inc. that is actually the petrol, and personally, I prefer it to the hoodman because of the extra scoop Barry mentioned. It really helps. It does fold down, but to be honest it just pulls on and off so I chuck it in the camera case unfolded so its ready for next time.

I actually was shooting a pilot for a TV show on the weekend with 3 cameras and the other ops kept trying to steal mine.. Gaffer tape hoods just wasnt cutting it for them.

Re: hoodman or petrol?

Huh, I didn't notice any petrol logo on it... I probably paid more for the Panasonic logo on mine.

Re: hoodman or petrol?

Yeah.. I have actually seen a ton of them but never with a petrol logo on them lol.. but there is a fabric tag that says petrol if you look on the bottom.

Re: hoodman or petrol?

Right. The Petrol hood is like $20 at B&H, the Panasonic one is $25, so yes, you're paying extra for the Panasonic logo, but you also get that logo on the additional plastic hood, so it's not just a logo ripoff, you do get something additional for it.

And yes, the 16x9 is identical to the Panasonic, being a Petrol hood with the same plastic shade (I had one of those as well, but now another fine member of the DVXUser.com family has it!)

Not sure what you're referring to...the Panasonics I have are no different than the ones I got from Petrol or 16x9.

I think the Petrol is far and away better... but then we use them on all our camera models, our 7" Panny LCD monitors, etc.

Re: hoodman or petrol?

I used a Hoodman on my GL1 for 3 years and found it very workable and easy on, easy off. When not in use, it folded flat and fit in my back pocket. The Petrol hood for my DVX is quite cumbersome, and takes more time to put on and take off, not to mention it will never fit in my back pocket. For locked down shots outdoors I think the Petrol is a better unit, but for run and gun stuff the Hoodman is more convenient.

and look at THIS AT THIS PRICE!!!!!!!!!!!

Imagine they could make an anamorpic squezzer version for the 3.5 inch hoodman at not much more. We should speak to these guys![/quote]They've got 2", 3", and 4". Which one for a 3.5"? I like hoodman. I've got a hood for my SLR, but I didn't see one for the DVX that's why I got Petrol.

One more thing while we're on the topic of Panny and Petrol. Are both the Panny and Petrol rain covers for the DVX both made by Petrol? The pictures on Ebay don't look exactly the same. I'd like to have the portabrace rain cover, but it's too expensive.

Re: hoodman or petrol?

Ok, I really think hoodman ought to stress the "up to" part, because that's the only reason I didn't go with hoodman. ****, they're cheap I might try one anyway, lol!

Re: hoodman or petrol?

I've got a Hoodman and have had to resort to MacGyvering a rectangular piece of wire hanger to place inside when open to retain it's shape or it tends to lean to one side like it's folding back up. For the price, it's great but a more rigid hood would be better in my opinion.

Mike

Jarred,

You shooting the pilot all on DVX's? Sounds fun!

Re: hoodman or petrol?

The only advantage I see the petrol over the hoodman is that the Petrol is plastic so if it rains it wont turn into a mop and you can clean it easier, and more importantly, it comes with an extra hood extension, that makes a huge difference.

Re: hoodman or petrol?

Ya I think I'm gonna go with the Petrol...I've had problems with the hoodman skewing on other size screens...I almost forgot about that.

What keeps the Petrol on? The two buckles? If you undo the buckles does the hood completely disassemble?

Re: hoodman or petrol?

I have the Petrol and it works great. No complaints and it adds some muscle to the already sexy DVX. :D
