Hoodman HCD7 Hood

Just got this... can't believe the design... See attached picture. The straps cover the power input, the power on button, the video SDI input is obscured and the audio out/in jacks. Either I have it set up wrong or this has been designed without no-one ever really trying the hood on an actual Odyssey 7Q. This kinda stuff is just painful.

I have it. It works fine, you just have to figure out how it works best for your 7Q battery setup. I just have the straps loop around the battery and the BNC plug. I also re-fitted mine with these backpack clips so it snaps on quickly. Once you figure out how it works best for you 7Q configuration and re-fit it with some backpack clips, it's easy to put on; but yes.... at first it's a bit like a puzzle figuring out how to fit it right as it's different for everyone's configuration.

Personally, I have it loop around the BNC connector and I would NOT have it loupe around the power plug because that's pretty small and more fragile than the BNC connector.

It's actually a really good hood in terms of blocking light and holding it's shape.

Westside AVs hood is a lot easier to put on and off, but you have to leave the plastic yoke on and I didn't have space for that in my bag; otherwise I probably would just use the Westside AV hood. The Hoodman is fiddly at first, but it's small and it fits nicely in my bag.

Would you be able to share a picture of how you do that? I cant get it to center if I loop the straps around the BNC's and the hood get's crooked.

Hey Essami,

I'm just leaving for work so I'll try and do it later. Just fiddle with it a bit and you'll figure out a good way. It's kind of crappy at first, but once you figure out a good way it's easy. Also, the buckles that I linked to really speed up the process a lot.

Hey Essami,

I attached 2 pics below. I added the buckle clips (small sized) attached with the red velcro straps which speeds the setup immensely. The Hoodman solution isn't the most elegant, but it works fine once you get the hang of it.

Cool, ok that looks good! And you believe the BNC connectors will hold and not break?

Yeah, it's a bit painful at first, but once you figure it out it takes about 30 seconds to put on and it holds it shape really well. The extra clips help a lot.

The Westside AV hood is definitely a bit easier, but it's large and takes up a lot of space. I cannot fit the Westside AV hood into my kit bag either with the plastic yoke on or off. So that's why I had to get the Hoodman because it folds up nicely. But yeah, it's not as convenient as Westside AV. Space vs. Convenience.

The Convergent hood looks like the best of both worlds, but since they're on Convergent time, who knows when that will come out.

The Hoodman isn't glamorous, but it has the redeeming feature of being able to cup your hands around it and block out most of the ambient light. The rain jacket is nice. I wish their solution for accessing the touch screen worked better (a slit in the lower visor); I usually end up sticking my finger through the snout of the hood.

It's cheap. It does the job. It looks better than the bit of cardboard covered in gaffer tale I was using before...
