Hoodman H-2 (P2 cards)

Just checked in with Hoodman, who was showing their own version of P2 cards at NAB this year. They said the new firmware upgrade for the HVX has set them back, and they now expect to be shipping cards by late summer. They will be priced 10 to 15% less than the Panasonic cards, and will start with a 16GB card, and have a 32GB card available not long after.

At 10 to 15% many may not be willing to take the risk. If it was 20 or 30% a few more people would be interested. I think the pricing by panasonic took them by suprise.

And as Barry pointed out in another thread, the firmware update was released ahead of schedule.

Even so, the firmware revision may have had something that they didnt account for, and had to make adjustments to.

Hats off to them for even trying to make the card in the 1st place, if they pull it off, more power to them. If they dont, well... nothing ventured, nothing gained... right :)

Even if it's only 10% less, it's still something that I think the user base would welcome, if only because it gives us a second supply source! With the current dearth of P2 cards, having a second independent supplier can only be viewed as a good thing, right? (presuming that they are, of course, 100% reliable and usable; if they're not, no professional would even consider them, so they wouldn't truly "be" a second source).

10%, 20%, 30%, it's all good, just so long as they appear on the market, work, and give us options...

It might also be interesting if they release the 32gig before panasonic.

Dare i say it... they probably can't. Where would the requisite HVX firmware upgrade come from?

There's a good chance this one firmware upgrade should be the last one needed. The 8GB firmware upgrade (from 4GB) was needed to handle split files across the FAT32 4GB file size limit, and the new upgrade was needed to handle the "R" series, but it may be that this firmware upgrade will be the one that "sticks"...

I hope they do rush a 32GB card out, that'd be awesome. It'd be more awesome if they'd fly up to 128GB sooner rather than later!

Okay, I'm confused.

If the firmware update came out EARLY.

How did that early release SET THEM BACK?

Wouldn't it accelerate development?

the firmware quite possibly could have set them back.. REGARDLESS of when it was released..
Imagine there was something they didnt account for in the
firmware release, it set them back.
Not sure whats confusing about that.

I apologize form my choice of the word "confusing."

I meant I was perplexed that an early release of the firmware has delayed development.

I would have thought an early release would permit MORE time to iron out things foreseen and unforeseen.

That's what I was thinking, that if it came out early it should have accelerated their introduction. But Look 1st makes a good point, if they were taken by surprise by something in the firmware, then yes that obviously could set 'em back.

That would be nice - but I'll believe it when I see it!

Unclear on Firmware Upgrade

Unclear on Firmware Upgrade

I have heard conflicting reports on the firmware upgrade for the 32gb P2 cards. Is this available now?

Can we install it ourselves or must we send the camera in for the upgrade?

Right now I have no upgrades, and am using 2 8GB cards.

Should I wait for the 32gb upgrade or is there no real difference between the 16gb and the 32GB firmware upgrades.

Probably this has been already answered, but I could not find it by searching.

Thanks in advance,

Michael Erlewine.

I believe I saw Jan say on this board somewhere that there will not be a firmware update needed for 32 gig cards. If you already have the 16gig firmware update, you *should* be good for 32's as well.

Yeah. you can do it yourself. Just follow the directions. It's not that hard. Copy the folder to an SD card using your computer. Stick that SD card into your camera and go into MCR mode. Make sure you have a full battery when you start the update. It can take a while.

Later,
Jason
