Honey, is it time to sell the MK3?

OK here's where I'm at:

I'm not that interested in 4k.
I'm not that interested in stills, mainly video.
I do like small form factor.
I have many canon EF lenses plus some old Nikkor AIS that I love shooting with.

I loved the mk2, but I don't know what it is about the Mk3, but I don't gel with it, it seems puffy and bloated....sounds dumb I know. Should I sell it and get an A7s is the question. Would it keep up with a ML raw enabled Mk3?

Also given the lenses I have which is the best metabones for me? EF mk3 or speed booster?

cheers,
Johnny.

I would sell and switch to a7s with metabones mk3 (there's also a mk4 in the way). Because the image is cleaner and sharper, and it has better DR (still don't know how much better but I expect a really big lot better), and the codec is better, and it has a really nice EVF with very nice peaking, and a tiltable LCD if that's what you need for a specific shot, and...

I have the FS700 and 7Q, plus the 5DIII and BMPCC

I had thought I would sell the 5DIII once I was used to the FS700/7Q..... But I just love the colours and skin tones of the 5DIII.

All the specs that have been mentioned above count for little unless the colour and skin tones are great (something Sony are not that well known for).

Remember that Nikon have had a huge DR advantage over Canon for years now (often with Sony sensors), yet Canon is still hugely popular.... That is because specs and numbers only mean so much.

...and 120 FPS, and no pixel bining, and 4k, and....

That's not entirely true, there are some modes relying on pixel binning like the mentionend 120fps mode. At least as far as i know.

Another bogus: APS-C or S35 - it was mentioned that it's still capable of 4k recording. But if the Crop on the A7 is already @ 10MP, i doubt it'll support full resolution @ A7s. Don't know if direct 2K readout is possible instead...

So you see: lot's of open questions. Hope for the best, plan for the worst.

On the other hand: the Mk3 is a well established camera, so why change? I don't think the support for EF Lenses goes that far on the Metabones Adapter than at the mk3. Another thing - please don't get that personally, but you mentioned the speed booster. you already know that the A7s is full frame and a speedbooster for FF35 won't make much sense?

Eer yes, knew that about the speed booster (well I do now anyways). Thanks for the sage advice and skin tones do look good on the Mk3.

i'm a goon, but my theory is that canon's popularity has to do with the ignorance of the mob on other brands combined with the ground breaking impact of the mk2. for example, at the exact same day rate, clients regularly choose 5d's over 1d's and even fs700's/7q's because they just simply don't know any better. imho popularity contests are what they are so what works and what will get you work aren't always the same thing...

this is a tough question because it's not apples to apples. it's more like years of marketing and the resulting public perception and of the 5d ...vs... the impressive promo videos and spec claims from sony about a camera that isn't out yet. my advice is that if you want to stay busy based on your kit, buy a red or stick with the 5d. even though there are currently much more capable and affordable camera's on the market, it will take a little more time before those newer cam's show up on the radar of producers and directors who keep pumping out reality spin off shows about the kardashians.

I think legions of still shooting understand very well that the lower DR of the canon is more than made up for by colour and skin tone.

I'm not gonna create a whole canon v Nikon debate, but to suggest it is mainly down to marketing does a huge disservice to canon and their users.

They have nailed skin tones.... It is that simple

Like I said, I have a FS700/7Q... I love it, but it doesn't have the skin tones of a Canon (RAW).... Nor does the F55 or RED, they perform well... But not as good as Canon. It is subjective, sure... But I think most professionals will agree.

And the OP was talking about 5DIII with raw... so profiles don't really play a part

A7s has 12 megapixels so... Makes sense it has full read out of 4k at s35 (8megapixels), 4k on FF unbinned but rescaled video,

a7 is binned

A full readout of 4K resolution out of this 12mpix sensor ends up with a 1.1x crop horizontally, and that's what Sony is calling "full frame" here. What's weird is that in APS-C mode they will read something like 2.8K Bayer and create a 4K image out of that. We'll have to wait and see how good that option actually is...

for me in advertising it is all about the skin tones…
with a budget from top to bottom…kodak film…arri alexa….sony 55(red dragon)

no or little budget..
kodak again (but super 16mm)…c300..5dmiiiraw

As a freelancer, I've gotten several calls from clients who want the 5DIII. I don't have one, so I lost the jobs.
If I had one, I'd keep it. It doesn't matter which camera has the better skin tones, image, or if Canons are over-hyped, etc. The client wants it, and they're paying the bills.
Maybe I should buy one.
