Honda Generators...

Anyone ever use one of these to power some lights? I saw these being used by some firefighters last week on a fire scene and they had some 500 watt lights attached them. I couldn't believe how quiet those things were too! I will have to think about buying them but I will definitely look into renting them sometime...

They are quiet, I have the Eu1000. You can get about 7 hours out of a tank, about a 1/3 of a gallon. During the hurricanes a couple years ago, I was running a mini fridge, PC, TV and DVD player, and several fans at once. I doubt you would be able to run too many big lights, but it would certainly run a 500 and a 250 with no worries. If you can use some reflectors or bounce cards, you should be good. I would also recommend a really long cord and maybe try to hang some heavy blankets around it to dampen some of the noise. Just be sure you keep them far enough away to prevent any fire hazards.

I just noticed you're in Wilmington. What part? My Mom's family lived around there when I was a kid, down near Market St. on N. Van Buren.

I have two of these and and they work great. I don't use them for lighting so I can't give you any info on how they would work out for that though. They are very quiet and a great generator. I got very good pricing from www.mayberrys.com and would buy from them again.

I've got a 3000. It is very quiet *for a generator*, but if you were trying to do sync sound work, well, you'd still have to make sure it was a long way away, behind a building or a truck or something. But yes, they're excellent.

I can second that...I have an EU3000 and it's quiet if you ever happen to run it besides a construction type genny. But as Barry pointed out for sync sound work you still have to run it some length. I think for one show we ran it about 100ft away from set and tucked it around a corner and it was fine.

It's hard to find online prices on these honda generators but it looks like the price of an EU3000 is about $1700 from what I can tell? Also, anyone think there is a benefit from using an LPG version rather than gas?

Yes, a 3000 is in the ballpark of $1700. Try to buy it from a local dealer though, because the shipping charges will probably be exorbitant. I forget what it weighs, but it's over 100 pounds.

I used a Honda EU2000 for a night music video shoot: http://www.redlightdriver.com/video/rldlightsvideo.mov (see the 2nd half of the video)

I really wanted/needed the EU3000 but it wasn't available, so we also had to use the honda and a much louder kawasaki generator, but since it was for a music video and not dialog it was fine. For this shoot we used 4- 500 watt lowel lights.

We didn't exactly have permission for this location so I was looking for the quietest solution and the Hondas are about as quiet as they come

Just want to say I'm really glad someone started this thread . . . I've been trying to decide between the 2000 & 3000 for a while now. Think I'll start with the 2000 then add a second one later.

Anyhow, thanks.

If I had to buy one genny, it would be the Honda 6500. I have rented it enough to have paid for it twice....well, almost...lol
Always works,quiet-enough. Like others, I hide it down the street or around the back of the grip truck. I sometimes use a couple of C-stands to hang furniture blankets AROUND the genny to muffle and re-direct the sound away from set. In a pinch, I found a new, cardboard , refrigerator shipping box. Closed most of one end and placed it over the genny. The open end facing away from set. Take extra oil and gas with you...your good to go. Love the Hondas....
