Homemade Should Mount

Hello Everyone,

This is my first post on the site and I have a couple of questions. I am a student and have to shoot a project tomorrow, Does anyone know what the best home solution for a shoulder mount. I have heard I could use a piece of wood and a screw that would fit through the piece of wood into the tripod mount on the bottom of the camera. However, I am slightly skeptical of that approach. In addition, has anyone every used a steady Cam with the DVX? How much weight is necessary to balance the DVX? Has anyone ever shot in the rain? Sounds dangerous right, I was thinking of maybe using a big umbrella? Is this a dumb idea? Will there be to much compensation from the rain that might ruin the camera? Any help with any of my questions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I am a huge fan of homebuilt rigs, I have a plethora of camera support stuff from a handheld stabilizer to a 14' crane. And I'm sure that I'm getting shots that would otherwise cost much more than the pittance I have invested. I would caution against trying to put something together today for a shot you need tomorrow. Anything home built needs a little time to perfect. There are rarely ever no kinks. Therin lies the cost of most pre-engineered solutions. The materials and labor to build the final product are only a portion of the cost. You are also paying for the first three they built that were not exactly right, and the weeks they spent trying to get the thing to work for most shots most of the time. I have used the DVX with my stabilizer and I'd say there was about 6 lbs on the bottom of the stabilizer. Not really all that light. While I have not shot in the rain, I have shot in a shower (camera shooting a subject IN the shower, NOT the camera in the shower). and I was pretty paranoid about it, there was a little splatter, and alot of condensation. The shots came out ok though, and the camera was unscathed.
