Homemade mini 35 grabs

Re: Homemade mini 35 grabs

Is it just me, because I keep thinkin' that SURELY it is possible for a small company to make a 'Mini35' device for under 500 notes?

Are the components REALLY that expensive? And just think of the built-in market for a piece of kit like that...? :)

Re: Homemade mini 35 grabs

There was that dofsolver guy who posted and dissapeared. Oooooh he makes me so mad!

But if the quality were a little lower, I think these things could easily be made for between 500 and 1000. The mini-35 is awesome, but more than most people need.

Re: Homemade mini 35 grabs

The inherent problem with the mini35 is that it lowers resolution, though. Indie film makers love to pretend their movies will get 35mm blow ups, or at least a digital screening on the big screen, which is more realistsic. The mini35 gives you "film look" like nothing else, but only if you keep it to DVDs or less since it seriously lowers resolution. Still, I'd much rather use a mini35 than not use one.

What I would REALLY like is a single 35mm CMOS chip camera with SLR lenses. Apparently some guys in germany are working on making a reasonably affordable one. Sounds like a really cool project.

Re: Homemade mini 35 grabs

And just for those of you (like me) depressed with the cost of the Mini35 or the MovieTube or whatever, let's take a moment to remember how freakin' great the DVX is with or without fancy add-ons....

Feel better...? Good! If not, do a search for a great DVX movie like "Water's Edge"...Feel better now...?!

;)

I'm getting some more grabs and footage ready to put up......

Re: Homemade mini 35 grabs

dam teeck, thats a big A$$ image. its cool, you could use a better tripod. I don't want your DVX to have back problems. :)

Re: Homemade mini 35 grabs

Yeah its on 2 cheap tripods for now, still need to make a rail support system, but for now its fine. HEHE maybe the pics are too big, lol.......

Re: Homemade mini 35 grabs

I dunno, you would have to pay for the parts so....From the stuff I used its like this.

72mm diopter - $65
72-62 - $9
62-58 - $9
58-52 - $9
Project box - $7
2 UV filters - $20
Nuts and Bolts - $6
Apex dvd player(ad-1600 discontinued)/There is one on ebay for $35 with 6 hours left for the auction - $35
Total For Parts: $165
$150 to make it

$315 to make it all together including parts.

I used a dvd players holder to hold the cd, it was a cheap apex dvd player from frys for 50 bucks, so I guess we can get that if we need it or use a cd players... The good thing about the dvd players is that it has a 9 volt motor which spins really fast so there is very little grain. If you guys have the money you can get achromat diopters also.

Ill post some video clips soon so you guys can see how it works...in full res!

Re: Homemade mini 35 grabs

I'd be very interested in buying one if you could add a rail support system. I could only image how tough it would be to deal with two tripods when you are already dealing with a vertically/horizontally reversed image.  ;D

I don't have a DVX100A yet (still debating whether I should go for the Sony HDV or DVX100A), but an Agus35 may help me make an easy decision.

I'm looking forward to seeing some footage. Can we get some indoor footage as well as outdoor footage? I'm interested in how a DVX will film indoors with the Agus35 attached.

Re: Homemade mini 35 grabs

"$315 to make it all together including parts."

Which brings me back to what I asked before - why can't someone make a commercially available one for 500 bucks (or 300 quid for people like me in the UK?)

Re: Homemade mini 35 grabs

Because the parts used for the mini are of top quality, the ground glass, the prisms and stuff that flip the image and the ability to use different lenses. I dunno how someone would make it all fit and like how the mini is, with metal for under $500.

Re: Homemade mini 35 grabs

$315? I'd take you up on that deal -- assuming the clips you've yet to post look good, of course. ;D

Now if I could only finish that script. :P

Re: Homemade mini 35 grabs

Yeah, but couldn't someone still mass-produce a 'lower Quality' one for the prosumer market? :)

Re: Homemade mini 35 grabs

Hi, I'm making a prototype for myself

When I finish I will be avaiable to make a limited edition (20 or 30). Mine will be with rods, and nikon mounting. I'm still waiting for the diopter from amazon, but I think in 2 weeks it will be finished.
The final model will be made of steel. I'm able to make a small amount but the price will be around the 500$, because I have to make some pieces.

Let me know how many people will be interested.

Re: Homemade mini 35 grabs

Wow, that's impressive. One question: will it be possible to change the lens mount? Also, are you still using the clear CD for the ground glass? That would be question number two for those scoring at home.

Re: Homemade mini 35 grabs

1- Yes, Frosted CD device. I have a solution to produce quite perfect frosted CD. Plus 9 Volts powered equal no grain at all.

2- As this has to be a indie product, I supose everyone has acces to manual nikon and canon lens. So I think this 2 has to be defaults mounting systems. No arri pl or primo lenses, that's for the real mini35.

3- Mandatory 15mm rods for no shaking on the image.

4-I'm investigating about the same device but with pentaprima to not inverse solution. But due to precision and exponential complicated solution, nothing under 1000$ is possible to produce.
