Homemade mini 35 grabs

This is from a homemade 35mm for the DVX100A that I was finally able to make with my friend.  The bush is like 4-5 feet away from the background.  I used a 50mm nikon lens, came out pretty good.  Ill post some more pics later...  What do you guys think?

Great Grab Teeck - please post more!

How easy was it to build your faux Mini35? Could you post a piccie of how it looks? ;)

Re: Homemade mini 35 grabs

Ditto! Post some pics of the camera setup and detail how you made it! PUH-LEEEASE! ;D

Re: Homemade mini 35 grabs

Its very easy to make. We used the radioshack project box. Made two holes, and mounted a nikon lens cap on one side so we could put nikon lenses on. We then sanded a blank cd-r for a ground glass and used my dvd players motor cause its a 9v motor (spinning at 9v gets rid of the grain). We used 2 screws on the dvd player's cd holder w/motor so we could adjust the distance of the ground glass from the lens to get full focus range. We then put on a 52mm +7 diopter on the DVX and connected it to the box with filter rings. Took about 2 hours all together and it works very well. Now we just need to make rods to support it and its fully useable. Cost about $60 (+1,+2,+4 diopter set, 72-67 step down, 67-58 step down, 58-52 step down, project box, battery switch, led light). I would suggest getting 72mm diopters and then stepping down cause the edges of the diopter wont be getting used so there is less distortion and chromatic aberration. I think with a little more work it can be as good as the Mini 35. Try to get a achromat diopter, 2-element so there is no distortion or chromatic aberration. Ill post some pics of the setup and some more grabs!

I had my CD dummy, and found a broken cd player on the street but never did it, I thought using a Nikon F2 would be better (easier maybe)

did u have to turn the camera upside down?

Re: Homemade mini 35 grabs

Yeah guys Im working on it, Don't have the camera with me right now so as soon as I get it Ill post some more!

--Hey, Im new to the game of the mini-35 and I have been learning the schematics of the 'homemade' model, but if you can make the homemade work more like the mini-35, w/ the 72 mm...  ??? Basically, does anyone know where there are plans for a homemade that closely resembles a mini-35 (In layman terms) or does anyone know how to build one?  -I figure if i'm gonna build a homemade, I might as well go all out...

Re: Homemade mini 35 grabs

Well I'm not sure there are plans on how to make the actual mini 35.  I would think its difficult as the mini flips the image and has an actual glass spinning/oscillating, but you can try.  You can download a pdf of how the mini works from their site that might help.

The design is based on "http://www.mediachance.com/dvdlab/dof/index.htm", but we changed it a bit.  That design is really simple to make and you get pretty good results, and if I had an achromat then it would be even better. The only thing is you have to be precise on the cutting and eveything, the holes should be aligned and everything should be straight.  We didn't turn the camera upside down..had to do it in post.

Re: Homemade mini 35 grabs

Hey Ques,
You should wait for a little bit longer. Theres another member on here named jamey and he is in the process of producing the mini 35. I just got an email from him today and he said that he's putting the final touches in his machine shop in order to mass produce these beautiful devices ;D ...I cant wait...

Re: Homemade mini 35 grabs

Sweet. Bring on the cheap mini-35s.

Make them compatible with canon slr lenses, though! When I buy them, I want my toys (mini35 and next generation digital rebel whenever it comes out) to play nice!

*drools*

*remembers ridiculous expense of new toys and lack of a steady source of income*

*cries*

What is the price? Ask him for like a rough estimate or something. Thanks

Re: Homemade mini 35 grabs

Also ask him if its just still lens or can I put on Arri 35mm primes?  Also ask him if you have to be wide open on the like the Mini 35?  It'd be nice not to lose two stops.

Plus no ground glass to soften up the image since that would be done in an uprez or you wanted to you could put in the ground glass if you're going straight to video.
