Homemade dolly film.

Considering what this product really costs in the real world I think $400 - $500 is reasonable but then again I feel it's simply too costly for a "limitted" dolly set up. I'm going to try my hand at building one on my own.

$500 seems a little high, except for the fact that they all have to be hand-made. So given that it seems reasonable. That pro one, $6K??????? I don't know how they justify that, except that it's "movie equipment."

I do think, FutureUser, you could easily sell a lot of them by competing with that other company.

I'm not trying to compete with PST. I just want to give people who don't have their own work shop (or are less adept in the DIY department than others) the chance to have a really great tool for their filming. The cost covers materials and my time. I agree with you about the price of the Skater Mini. I think it is a great tool, and a beautiful executioin of design, but not at twice the price of my camera. I encourage anyone to give it a shot at making their own. But it is tricky and can get really frustrating.
I will be posting more footage using the dolly to rfute this "limited use" thought and also to show more than a "worm's eye" view.
Look for it in the next 36 hours.

Yeah, I hear you.

I didn't quite get the limited use comment either. On the PST site, they have video that shows them using theirs for a bunch of different things. Not just on the floor...

Just wanted to clear things up so that nobody thinks my comments were one sided. I think the dolly is awesome! I love the ease of use that it provides and the fact that there's minimal setup required for it. It can get into places that most dollies can not reach and really is an effective piece. The only draw back is you're forced to find a smooth surface and you're restricted to that surfaces height, length and width BUT there is a work around for this. You can easilt set up an ironing board and get your roll on the same way that a dolly does. : )

Okay,
This should make some of you happy. I am going to offer a limited number of the new design. (look for it tomorrow) for ONLY $300. This is the lowest I can go considering time and materials. After these are gone I don't know if I will make any more.
Sign up and let me know.
The new design, sorry no pics yet, is a more artful and pleasing to the eye version. There are no harsh angles and camera placement is up to you.
Tracking and repeatability are still highly accurate.
They will be made of plastic so as to resist the elements.

As to the question of applications? Easier and more flexible than a track system and far more portable.

New videe coming soon.

Hey nice work! I noticed you used Billy McLaughlin for your music. I reciently have been shooting for a documentary about him over the past few months... I JUST finished an edit for a teaser to go on the website (which isnt up yet i guess) and thought maybe you would enjoy it. Unfortunately the clips in the edit are not mine but the interviews were shot on a DVX though! Hope you like it!
