Homebuilt Dolly and the DVX

J.R. Hudson

Spirit Animal
This thread started off in the Cafe but I wanted to share the DVX footage.   This is the first test footage of a home built dolly based off the typical skateboard design model of plywood, angle iron, nuts and bolts and some skate wheels.  This is all shot 24pa inside with bare minimum lighting.

I'll be trying to get some EXT footage as soon as possible in good light.  I am pleased with this dolly so far.  It was built by a friend/writing/collaborative partner (I drank beer though).

About 16 Mbs and should take under 2 minutes on high speed.

Re: Homebuilt Dolly and the DVX

hey hudson your in OC right? Can I come take a look and try it?

Re: Homebuilt Dolly and the DVX

North County San Diego; south of OC (5 Miles east of O.Side)

I'm sure we can make arrangements

Re: Homebuilt Dolly and the DVX

John,

Pretty cool! I noticed it seemed a little "stroby" / stuttery. Did you have OIS on by chance? Or is this just because you're using 24p?

Were you standing on the dolly camera operating and have someone push & pull your or did you just set the camera on the plywood, leave the camera alone and push and pull it yourself?

Cool. Look forward to seeing more footage.

Re: Homebuilt Dolly and the DVX

sweeet...looks good man. are you using pvs pipe for dolly track?

Re: Homebuilt Dolly and the DVX

nice! i really liked the opening one, and the one where its pushing in to the bathroom.

Re: Homebuilt Dolly and the DVX

Other than the pipe handle, I have all the ingredients here to make me one, including some quality wheels bought specifically for this type project. How did you get the angle iron secured to the base? I have one long piece of angle that I will need to cut down, and there are no pre-drilled holes. The footage looks great and I am dying to get mine assembled.

Re: Homebuilt Dolly and the DVX

the smoothness of the dolly is almost mesmerizing john

nice work with the basement lighting as well! that looked very good. awaiting the arrival of your film ;D

Re: Homebuilt Dolly and the DVX

Thanks guys!  Your approval is encouraging.

OIS was on and the strobing is tpical of 24p.  I could have done SLOWER shots but had ZERO patience last night; was looking purely for 'function' last night.

I put the camera on and pushed myself on every shot except the 'creepy bathroom' push/pull.  My reluctant wife played
Dolly Grip on that one.

I haven't weighed it, but it feels about 30 to 40 Lbs.  The track is 1 1/4" PVC (10')

The light used was one 5600K FLoro 'spiral lamp' in a Brooder.

The little actor was my best friend; my son.

The angle iron was threaded using a 5/16 Tap and secured by 1 single bolt drilled through the plywood and into the angle iron.

My friend built it for the record.

Plans for V2 are already being made to add a seat and pedestal for camera.

Re: Homebuilt Dolly and the DVX

Can anyone tell me what is wrong with the file I downloaded? It is 16.2mb and when I played after downloading it showed only the logo animation and rest of the movie was only a black frame. Anyway I am trying my luck by downloading it again since my connection is fast for a change(10-12 kb/sec.)

Re: Homebuilt Dolly and the DVX

Now it is downloading properly. Previously It got stopped just after the logo animation. Quick download window in my browser (opera) says file size 16.2 and I thought its downloaded completly.

Re: Homebuilt Dolly and the DVX

Looks great! That looks like pretty much the same thing I built off internet plans a few years ago, and it still works well.

Anybody notice what John reads in the bathroom? ;D

Re: Homebuilt Dolly and the DVX

Nice job John. I love the vibe in your house...very tasteful. Is there a reason why you are obsessing on the bathroom? :D

Re: Homebuilt Dolly and the DVX

John. i have to say that looked DAMN COOL!!

I really liked it. Very smooth. I cant believe you were shooting and moving it. good stuff. Now I want one. :(

Re: Homebuilt Dolly and the DVX

LOL

Yes, I do all of my reading there! LOL

I shot in these locations mainly cause my wife was like "Get the track and dolly out of my face please..."

So, I had to shooot 'around' her; she was cleaning for XMAS family company that are arriving today and Thursday!

Re: Homebuilt Dolly and the DVX

I imagine you doing a dolly shot past all the delicious Xmas feast in the dining table.
