GH2 Holy sweetness... has anybody else tried out FilmConvert?

So... I was kinda critical about this, and almost didn't try it, but right now I am more than a little surprised. I always thought I wasn't too bad at grading an image in a way that made it more film-like in appearance... but this is pretty crazy. Right off the bat using the standard settings on each stock provided in the plugin, I'm getting better results than anything I've been able to do on my own. Can't believe how good it actually looks. $249 for a full version is way steep in my opinion for film emulation software... but this is the first thing I've seen that might actually be worth it.

If you haven't tried it, they have a free trial of the full version with watermarks, but it will give you a taste of what it's like. Highly recommended if you want to make your footage a bit more film-like in appearance.

Don't know why I'm geeking out on this so hard, but damn, the more I play with this, the more amazing it is... You guys seriously need to try this.

It would be helpful if you provide a link and some pictures/footage, this post while a heads up is really not helping us.....

One thing I haven't seen yet is where you choose which camera did the shooting? As it seems to make a difference in how the software processes the footage, I'd want to make sure the GH2 (and future GH3) are accounted for.

That is the most shameless plugin hype I've seen yet.

Sorry, I didn't mean for a shameless plug... I guess I could have linked to the nofilmschool article, but they referenced Vincent Laforet's article as well. I'm definitely not the type of person to plug something like this for any benefit.

Yeah, I like the results as well. They don't have a GH2 profile, so you'd have to go with OTHER I think, which looks nice but it would be nice to know the differences applied between that profile and the Canon profile. There is clearly a difference in the shadows and elsewhere.

Roman, have you compared your grain overlays with what the plugin provides?

I have indeed. Rgrain overlays seem employ a very "static" look, where the grain seems render as an overlay but not necessarily as part of the image... I can't really explain it, but grain is much more obvious in the highlights than in the shadows, more so than you would expect. It doesn't quite behave like regular film.

filmconvert seems to coalesce the grain and color temperature of film stocks in such a dynamic way, that it really appears to be part of the image. Grain isn't necessarily more potent in the highlights than in the shadows and it really fuses well with the image. I'm always tweaking so many settings in MBL to get the look I want... but this gets VERY close to what I need just using the preset; never seen anything quite like it before.

Why is it shameless?

Well thanks for pointing that out; honestly I've never been a huge fan of Laforet or Bloom, although they're kind of like "first on the scene" bloggers with comprehensive information about new releases. But if these types of links are going to benefit him, then I'll just find a different source next time.

Didn't even notice that tip jar link for a review video... that actually does irk me. I can understand tipping a full out production... but a review video? Definitely not liking that.

@L1N3ARK

Thanks!!

Does this work in FCP as a plugin? I see it does in After Effects and X but not Final Cut Pro? Also how are you using it, as a stand alone item?
Help me out
thanks

I DL'd the plugin for AE and like what I am seeing. I just wish the stand alone version was available on the PC.

Whats wrong with the tip jar? Guys like Laforet, Bloom & Hurlbut have to eat too, right? I mean its a tip; it optional, you don't have to pay unless you want to. Do you get irked in a cafe if there is a tip jar on the counter?

And you still get to watch it for free if you don't want to tip. I think its great that working pros like these guys spend time making reviews and handing out free tips and advice. If they can make a buck on the side here and there then all the better, and no harm done.

This is just silly! SILLY! It's just a plug in that your can TRY or AVOID. It's a pretty darn nice plug in too. Has lots of nice controls for fine tuning. Why make such a big deal out of Laforet's review? Read the review, see what you get out of it. Then try the demo and see if you find the plug-in useful.

Totally fine. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. He is a businessman above all. And that gets noticed by the companies that lend him the new toys to play with before the rest gets to buy them later. In the real world it is all about selling. If people don't understand that reality they are really, really out of the loop.
