Try converting the clip to ProRes using ClipWrap or FCP. Then try playing it back on the laptop and the desktop, and see the difference. If the laptop is having trouble decoding h264, it should have an easier time with the ProRes. It will also answer your questions about baking in the noise in a conversion.
