Holographic storage?

Holographic storage is quickly becoming a reality. I had not seen that gadget before. Maxell and In-Phase Technology showed a holographic storage solution at NAB 2005 (I wasn't there, did anyone see the demos?)

Here is In-Phases home page. They have a couple of cool movies explaining the media. Check it out:

I'm excited. I think that this will answer the "How do you archive P2 media?" question. According to Maxell, the 300 gb disks will be shipping in late 2006. They claim that they will reach eventually reach 1.6tbs of storage in 2009.

I definitely dig the holographic storage solution.
I'm not sure if anyone's posted anything on perpendicular storage techniques, Seagate's solution is expected to offer a terabyte, pretty interesting, LINK TO THE ARTICLE

It is exciting stuff. However, I do worry about another format war, such as Optware vs. Inphase and Maxell, vs, who ever. This kind of competetion my drive down costs, but maybe not as fast as the economies of scale of one accepted format would. Also, the intital costs are going to be prohibitive for a lot of these products.

Within 5 years though, we are going to see some pretty amazing sh*t!. Just think, I paid $3900 for a 67 gig SCSI raid in 1999 and had all the storage I needed (or so I thought). The "terabyte lifestyle". I like that.

I have been reading about this all over. And even read at engadget about 30GB cards for $1 each!!! The drive will start at $2000, but for that kind of costs, that is worth it, and it will drop. 3x faster than Blue-Ray? Hmm wonder how fast that is. At least it solves backup questions if not recording questions.

I've been hearing about it for a while and when I recently saw the HVC solution the HVX quickly jumped into my mind, 1800$ for the reader (and writer? or is it read only?)
this will be the cost of one 8GB P2 card, you pay the 1800$ once and for 100$ you get 100 30GB cards, thats 3 terabytes
if this type of solution (cost-wise) will be adapted, buying cards will be like buying tapes or DVD-Rs, we will have no problem passing the cards to the post department and archiving them

Jan (Panasonic) even mentioned this as a possible archival tool at the HVX200 - DVXUser forum at NAB. Gotta love technology....
