Holly Cow!

Here is Stu "The Orphan" Maschwitz's take:

The BBC Are DV Rebels

"Some things to note, besides the obvious:

Notice how important the color correction is to the overall look and feel. You can see some of the shots prior to grading in the breakdown section, and they look OK, but not great. An aggressive grade hides a multitude of sins and turns war into WAR! (Chapter 6)

Ditto camera shake. Making the shots dynamic is genre-correct and hides the simple split-screen techniques. (Chapter 4)

These guys clearly had a plan. They knew what shots they needed and they wend out and built them piece by piece. They started at the end and worked backward. (Chapter 1)

Last note: Look out. Soon a client or producer or both will come to you asking for the Omaha beach scene for a budget of three peoples' day rates. Notice that nowhere in the video do they mention how long the post took, or how many people it involved."

Yeah I saw that this morning, it's awesome. I'm just starting to do my effect work on my WWII short,.. it'll be crap compared to that!

That music was bad though, it made my stomach hurt. It felt like queer eye for the straight guy theme music mixed with WWII footage,.. terrible!

So what camera are they using if it's 100fps? I see they have a Sony HDV cam, but 100 fps?

Hmm...

Plus there was a film flash after the slate,... makes you wonder.

Sorry... but where did it say 100fps?

On the slate just before the explosion recording.

I watched 4 times just looking for a "100fps" reference. You have to specifically stop to read the slate. You cant catch it full speed.

I like how Dewy expected us all to have stopped there.

And I'm not sure what he's alluding to regarding the flash, but it looks like it's just an editing transition.

I was impressed. The green screen and multi-people compositing were great. Can anyone hint to the techniques behind this short?
